A Very Helpful Octopus Riker was taking a nap in his rock pool home when he heard his phone ding.
Bleary-eyed, the octopus was pleased to see he had a message from his friend Paddy, the pufferfish.
He was less than pleased to read what it said.
Help! Uncurling his many arms, the octopus raced from his rock pool across the rocks and into the ocean, swimming straight for Paddy's house.
Paddy lived in a house made of coral with a seaweed roof, and when Riker arrived, he charged through the door, calling his friend's name.
Paddy! Up here, came a muffled reply from the upstairs bedroom.
There, Riker found Paddy laying face down on the floor beside the bed.
What are you doing down there? the octopus asked.
I feel embarrassed to tell you, said the pufferfish, as Riker helped him back onto the bed.
Oh, nonsense, you can tell me, said Riker.
Well, you see, said Paddy reluctantly, I was trying to move my bed and I've somehow hurt my back.
I can hardly swim.
Does it hurt now? asked Riker.
Only a little, although I'm very stiff because of it, Paddy answered.
Let me do something to cheer you up, insisted Riker.
Is there something I could get you? Actually, yes, said Paddy, finding his smile.
I'd love some toffees, if you could get me some.
I'd be happy to, said Riker.
You can count on me.
The young octopus left right away.
He was always helping those in need.
After all, he had eight arms.
Why not use them to make others' lives that little bit easier? Riker and Paddy were very lucky to live close to Annie Mart, an enormous supermarket that catered for animals of the land, sea and sky.
It had been built on the edge of the beach, half in and half out of the water.
Riker was sure he could get Paddy's toffees there.
