Episode 126 - Let's fix one thing : "answer", "reply" and "respond"

The first one is the word answer.

It's kind of the immediate verb.

It's the most direct and honestly, it's the most useful of the three.

We use it for things that demand a yes-no answer or a specific piece of information.

You answer a question, you answer the door, and you answer the phone.

It's a one-way street of information.

I answered his question.

Reply is more for correspondence.

It's like an exchange.

You use it mostly for writing emails or letters or text messages.

And it suggests a kind of a back and forth.

I'll reply to your email by the end of the day.

And respond is the professional and formal one.

It's about a reaction.

You use it when you're acting after a stimulus.

In business, you respond to a proposal.

You respond to a crisis.

or you respond to your client's needs.

It doesn't necessarily mean you answer them or meet their needs, but you do respond.

It sounds sophisticated and higher level than answering, but not as precise.

The market responded well to the news.

It didn't answer the news.
