Thomas Jefferson wrote some of the most famous words in American history, doubled the size of the country, battled Hamilton over federal power, and helped shape the nation we know today. He also enslaved more than 600 people and fathered children with Sally Hemings. So how do we reconcile the author of “all men are created equal” with the man who didn’t live by those words?
