Maria was born in Joliet, Illinois, and raised in Athens, Greece.

She received her B.A. from the University of Iowa, her M.F.A. in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College, and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

She's also a 2026 recipient of the Lincoln Arts Council Artistic Achievement Award in the Literary Arts.
