Ada’s life becomes increasingly mysterious to those around her. * * * Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Life has always been a dreadful series of disappointments long before I met you.
I was always in love with movie stars, people in books, fantasies that could never become real.
Those I've lost and those I've never had.
Rotten luck for you.
Maybe I was expecting too much from life.
Does everyone feel this way? Are they only pretending to be happy or satisfied with life? Who knows? I can't know anything but what I myself experience.
How else does a person try to understand the world they are born into? It's not a question of blaming you.
For some reason, we are married and stay together.
You are just as unhappy in your own way as I am.
I don't hate you.
I hate myself for thinking you were the solution to anything.
Though her words could be cutting, it often seemed most of Ada's anger was directed towards herself, not Glenn.
Nonetheless, as you know, their marriage was not a good one.
Glenn was blunt about that when I spoke with him face to face.
Glenn did say, though, it wasn't all bad.
With some gentle prodding from me, he seemed to let himself go back to memories of simpler times.
And when he did, there was a lightness about him.
He talked about Ada's love of baseball and soap operas, her savviness with the stock market.
He lit up when remembering an old newspaper article written about Ada in her early 20s about success she had at one of her jobs.
He made sure to find it for me.
On the paper, he wrote, she was so proud of this.
Glenn told me that for the first 10 years of their marriage, they were happy.
