Exploring the National Portrait Gallery

Hi, I'm Juno Rae, and I'm Families and Young People's Program Manager at the National Portrait Gallery.

Juno, we're currently in the National Portrait Gallery.

We're going up an escalator.

It feels very exciting.

It feels like we're about to enter something quite special.

What are we about to see? What is the National Portrait Gallery?

Well, the National Portrait Gallery is, uh, a gallery in London, uh, which tells the story of Britain, uh, through portraits.

And, uh, we use art to bring history to life and, uh, explore living today.

We are very quickly approaching the top of this escalator.

Talk to me about some of the things that we're gonna see.

A, a portrait for people that don't know, is basically a painting of a person.

Yeah.

Absolutely.

So it can be a painting, but it can also be all sorts of other things.

So it might be a photograph, it might be a sculpture.

We've got all sorts of different portraits here at the gallery.

So where we're heading at the moment, we're heading into Room One.

We're starting at the beginning of our collection with the Tudors, which is always a very popular gallery, uh, especially with our families.

So that's why one of our, uh, trails, History Detectives, helps our families explore lots of the different pieces on display in this room.

Tudors obviously very famous, very popular in school as well.

Absolutely.

Um, we've got the six wives of, of Henry VIII here.

Yeah.

And we have an exhibition, uh, this summer, Six Lives, which absolutely, uh, focuses on the six wives of Henry VIII.

And, um, we have a, uh, activity sheet available for our families when they, uh, when they see that exhibition as well.
