Treat the Biology, Not Just the Symptoms: Personalized Home Care for Dental Hygiene Patients

Saliva isn't just water in your mouth.

It's an incredibly complex biological fluid.

It lubricates tissues, it buffers acids, it contains antimicrobial components.

It carries a calcium and phosphate to help support remineralization it helps with speaking swallowing tasting digestion and it's part of the mouse natural defense system and i think sometimes we forget that think about your dry mouth patients we tell them to drink more water and yes they need to stay hydrated but water and saliva are not biologically interchangeable Water can wet the mouth, but it can't replace everything saliva does.

That distinction matters when we start thinking about what we recommend for home care.

As hygienists, we're really in the business of disease prevention, patient education, helping patients control disease.

But here's the problem.

They're only with us two, three, maybe four times a year.

So I don't think our biggest challenge is what can we accomplish during that appointment that they're with us, but the bigger question is what happens the other 363 days when they're not with us? That's why what we recommend for home care matters so much.

It can't always be brush better, floss more, use this rinse.

Different conditions require different strategies.

Let's start with chronic gingival inflammation.

We see the patient who comes in over and over again with generalized bleeding.

Maybe they have gingivitis, maybe they have periodontal disease, maybe it's inflammation around an implant.

We do our part in the office, but then they go home.

And this is where I want something that continues to work between appointments.
