What's up Dream Warriors! We are wrapping up our Childhood Trauma series this week with one neither of us have ever seen but it was recommended to us for this series and wow, Return to Oz did not…
All right, like we said in the intro this week, we're talking about Return to Oz from 1985.
Starting off with the synopsis.
Dorothy, saved from a psychiatric experiment by a mysterious girl, is somehow called back to Oz when a vain witch and the Gnome King destroy everything that makes the magical land beautiful.
uh this is like a much darker sequel semi-sequel to the wizard of oz like everything's very dark and dreary in this one there's not a lot of music if any i don't think there's any musical aspects to it but This movie was directed by Walter Murch.
This was his only directing credit, but he was an editor and a sound worker on a lot of big-name movies, such as Jarhead, Cold Mountain, K-19, The Widowmaker, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and a few others.
But he did have friends in high
places.
Yes, he did.
Because he was actually fired...
Briefly, one week in production and his friends, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg intervened and convinced Disney to rehire him.
Wild.
I mean, that's crazy.
Fred, holy shit.
Right.
And like, look at them.
And then like, I'm sorry, but like this guy had one directing credit and like, sure.
He was an editor and he did sound work and stuff, but like what the fuck happened, man?
Yeah.
Like you had these guys pulling so many strings for you to get back onto this movie.
Like why, why was this your only directing credit? Yeah.
It's crazy to me.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's a crazy story.
