A piano phrase hangs in the air; a voice enters, and the room seems to change around it. This week’s *A Love Supreme* follows those moments of transformation, moving from Keith Jarrett’s expansive “Flying” to the restless promise of Cécile McLorin Salvant’s “Something’s Coming,” with Thelonious Monk’s “Blue Monk” providing an angular path into the blues.
The voices carry their own histories. Ella Fitzgerald hums what words might struggle to hold; Nina Simone answers with “Blues for Mama”; Lucy Yeghiazaryan turns up the temperature with “Blow Top Blues.” Charles Mingus and Jazzmeia Horn offer distinct encounters with “Moanin’,” while Anat Cohen and Fred Hersch settle into the shaded contours of “Mood Indigo.”
Elsewhere, Julian Lage, Jeremy Cunningham and Kris Davis open new routes through the music. Meshell Ndegeocello, Bill Callahan and Chris Thile take on “With God on Our Side,” and Sweet Honey in the Rock’s “Study War No More” brings the human voice back to its oldest work: witness, consolation and hope.
Join me for three hours of discovery, deep listening and unexpected company.
