And this is based off a paper by Bassov in 2017. where he and a colleague, I can't remember his co-author's name, but they put forward the idea that this phenomenon is dependent on whether the interaction has an even or odd number of protons and neutrons, and that if you deplete in neutrons, or rich in carbon-13, for instance, you're going to see a depletion in heavy hydrogen because that bond wants to be an even number of protons and neutrons.

So I haven't explained that very well, but it's like a mathematical, numerical resonance there, and the body seems to prefer specific numbers in the bonds.
