The timeline collapsed.

Yuji Naka, the series co-creator, resigned in March of that year.

The team got split because they were also making Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii, and Sega insisted it had to ship for the 2006 holiday season.

When good games go bad...
D

it was an odd one right so it had a number of severe technical issues long loading times camera problems glitches that could stuff like progress i've saved them the main one which i remember i've never played it but i remember the yeah well, about it, but the development was split and that was ultimately what probably was the failed decision.
D
38:39Dan PHOST
The project was originally being developed by Sonic Team under Yuji Naka with ambitions larger than a traditional Sonic game.
D
38:46Dan PHOST
But during development, Sega said, oh, some of you should also work on Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii.
D
38:52Dan PHOST
So they split and then the lead left during that development time.

There's like a rich kid that wants to be in the races, and he's a real dick, and we think he...
J
67:09Jeff GerstmannHOST
We're gonna u- we think he's gonna use his money to, uh, to like take over- the, the racing league and you should come in and beat him even though you haven't raced in a long time you, you mysterious helmeted protagonists should come in and, and, and fuck this guy over and so you know in, in the initial kind of tutorial race you do exactly that and that kind of sets things in motion but there is something weird about an alien rich kid being a real dick and then storming off that just feels kind of I don't know like it's interesting that it has any kind of narrative hook at all um but like out of the gate it's a it's a real it's a it's a weird way to go so I don't know uh the the racing feels really good there's multiple types of speeders and whatever else and um and I think it's uh it's got a good sense of speed and the the collisions between the speeders and stuff is is really fun they it's excite bike by the way I don't know if that's uh I don't know if that's immediately apparent but like um you have two different types of boost and so one of them is a boost meter that fills up and you use it and then occasionally you click in the right stick to to basically arm your ramjet boost and with that one you hold the boost button down and a meter starts to fill and it's like the excite bike heat meter and if you overheat your vehicle well in this case if you overheat your vehicle it explodes if excite bike had exploding motorcycles that probably would have been pretty cool uh but instead you just overheat and have to wait for it to cool down before you can get back on the track uh but the idea that there is a weird excite bike style boost in this game is is real crazy um it's got landing mechanics and stuff and you know i think if you've if you've seen the game in action you've seen the hud and and you've seen a lot of that stuff um and so i have not spent a ton of time with it but as i said back at summer game fest after watching some of it there like it is kind of a rogue light run based kind of deal where you kind of need to make it through this chain of events and if you lose you lose tokens and you can only lose so many tokens before you're out and and so they kind of give you um and that's like the main kind of campaign mode in in galactic racer um and i think that's an intriguing way to build your single player component for a racing game and i think that's a really kind of neat way to go uh in in as far as like giving you some upgrades that are going to stick with you and so you know you're eventually going to kind of chip away at these races and get through them but if you lose there is a consequence but it's not a massive one you know like there's there's stuff there that i think feels like a pretty good balance it also has of course online modes there's like arcade modes and time trials and other stuff in there as well and so you you kind of have a a bunch of different opportunities to uh to to dip into that and and and try to race in different ways it has friends leaderboards for the time trials and and all of the stuff you would you would want to be there um looks real nice on pc that's where i've been that's where i have started playing it so uh i'm gonna play more of that and you know maybe we'll have some time to talk about it next week uh unless something else shows up god i don't know so many so many games coming out um why don't we get into the news sega's in the news they decided to launch a discord server yesterday an official discord server for sonic the hedgehog that's gone well that's gone well for them uh something like 50 000 users joined they had like a small handful of channels and like two moderators and immediately all of the uh dirt bags that really like sonic the hedgehog got on this server they uh there's a bunch of great screenshots going around someone joining and pretending to be yuji naka which videogameschronicle.com uh your home for the news has has actually documented some of this stuff as well they saw some of the same stuff i saw uh where the fake yuji naka posted it gets very very lonely in this cell could someone sing me a beautiful beautiful song um a lot of people are saying they just got banned uh according to vgc one user complained they couldn't post a message saying israel supports sonic another claim to be banned for writing i like super mario um a lot of people making jokes about grooming users on the sonic the hedgehog discord the jokes kind of write themselves as such a lot of the channels on the server have been uh have been locked down and uh you know users who are going to be there for like a long time here's someone posted uh the best sonic games legit are one sonic chronicles two sonic 06 three sonic forces four sonic rumble five any sonic boom anyone who disagrees with me supports israel that got someone banned people posting in all caps are getting banned so it's going great i feel like they should just lean into this because that's the sonic fandom that's what the server you started why would you ban any of these people these are the people you invited these are the people you attract the fuck do you think the sonic the hedgehog fandom is if not this like why wouldn't you launch this server with a channel devoted to arguing about what the right color for sonic's arms are like what you what the fuck are you running like what are you doing Oh, let's get a server going.

So the game, uh, Sonic the Hedgehog was built by Sonic Team at Sega in Japan with Yuji Naka on the code, Naoto Ohshima, uh, drawing that spiky blue mascot, and Hirokazu Yasuhara designing the levels.
