Young Men

So now let's think about people that are also in callings as well.

And somebody, you know, gets called in new and maybe they're, you know, over a part of the primary, young men's, and then they change everything.

They say, okay, we were doing all of this.

We're going to change all of this.

You really are talking about young women's lives in a way that is different.

I'm not gonna say you're not talking about young men's opportunities also, but you are talking about young women in a way that is a little bit different.

The impact of having a baby for a young woman, uh, that is gonna have some far-reaching implications for education, for career, for all kinds of things.

And young women may be feeling some natural, "Hey, wait a minute.

... who was doing the asking out of dates.

Right, right.

Um, you know, you, you might remember that up until the beginning of the 21st century, one of the lessons that was taught in Young Women's and Young Men's, the men's was choosing your eternal companion, the Young Men's, and the, the one for teenage girls, the Young Women, was learning to become, becoming an eternal companion, which are not the same thing.

Oh my gosh.

We were living in this m- bedroom community up in Sparks, Nevada, northeast, northeast corner, and super engaged in the church.

I was the Young Men's president of the ward.

Yeah.

And, you know, within the first couple months, I was the Young Men's president, and I was... [laughs] One of my favorite stories is-

And I gave those boys everything.

Mm-hmm.

Well, one of the things that I think is interesting is, like, when I think of church, I have a very cemented idea of what that is.

You've got, like, these components: sacrament meeting, Sunday school, primary, and then, like, Young Men's, Young Women's, priesthood, Relief Society.

And, like, that's the recipe of what church is, but that is a relatively recent conception.

And obviously that's been our entire lifetime, since none of us were alive before 1980.

The beginning of this year they announced we're gonna go to a new two-hour block, which looks like this.

We've got sacrament meeting for an hour, and then second hour is going to be split between Sunday school instruction for youth and adults and children, and then the h- second half of that hour is going to be those gendered classes, to use an imperfect terminology there.

But Aaronic Priesthood, Young Women's, Young Men's, Relief Society, Elders Quorum, all that jazz.
