You Got Lucky

It ends very sadly.

Anyway, in 1982, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released You Got Lucky.

It was the lead single from their fifth studio album called Long After Dark and hit number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, number one on the Billboard Top Tracks Rocks chart for three weeks, as they called that chart at that time.

The music video is also pretty popular on MTV.

He fought for his rights and theirs in the process.

I could go on about all the hits he had that don't get played a lot, like Last Dance with Mary Jane, Don't Come Around Here No More, You Got Lucky, American Girl, Breakdown, and a whole lot of others.

But the reason why we're talking about him for an extended period of time is because of one event.

His bankruptcy.

Into the Great Wide Open, which was number four on Mainstream Rock Airplay, November 2nd, 1991.

You're So Bad, You Got Lucky, Love is a Long Road, Refugee, Running Down a Dream, and The Waiting.

And a bunch of other songs.

What a show.

I feel like they were something being forced down our throat.

And while You Got Lucky would eventually become one of my very favorite Tom Petty songs, at first I resisted it.

And Don't Come Around Here No More was not my favorite song at all.

In fact, I still don't really like it.

Well, now I'm trying to think of the first time I heard them.

[laughs]

It would probably be seeing that You Got Lucky video and-

Right.

I feel like there was something being forced down our throat.

And Don't Come Around Here No More was not my favorite song at all.

In fact, I still don't really like it.

Like, the first time you heard them, did you think, oh, man, those guys are good?

Now I'm trying to think of the first time I heard them.

It would probably be seeing that You Got Lucky video.

Right.

I mean, fucking The Waiting...

Don't Do Me Like That, Refugee, I mean, you really couldn't get away from him being on the radio, so that's pretty much how I got into him, um, and then just gradually going back to his first album, which I think was one of the first ones I've ever got, what a fucking debut album that is, man, and, um, but I really became a Tom Petty fan, I think, around Full Moon Fever, man, I'd love that album, dude, I know it's considered a solo album, but, uh, I'd put them all together, but what a fucking great album that was.

I mean, those songs are still fresh sounding today, in my opinion, as much as the rest of his catalog.

I mean, it never gets old.

I know.

I love that video.

But I always liked it with Refugee because MTV didn't have much videos back in the day.

I think 82 or 83 where I got MTV.
