#51 - Can AI create a golden age of scientific discovery? - Yossi Matias
Y
2:22Yossi MatiasGUEST
Uh, so you know, Google Research, we're actually working across many products and many initiatives, so a lot of what was discussed is actually something that makes the team proud.
Y
2:32Yossi MatiasGUEST
As an example, some work on generative UI from last year actually made it into, uh, very, uh, with announcements into products.
Y
2:40Yossi MatiasGUEST
But perhaps I'll focus on one thing that we're really excited about, uh, which is how we're using AI to accelerate scientific discovery.
Y
2:48Yossi MatiasGUEST
And, uh, what we shared today is what we call Gemini for Science, which has essentially a few experimental tools that are hopefully going to accelerate scientific discovery itself by including hypothesis generation, which is built with AI Co-Scientist, and model discovery, which is built with Alpha Evolve and, um, uh, Empirical Research Assistant.

And we have also literature, uh, insights, which is built on model, uh, on NotebookLM.

My personal experience actually watching, uh, a nearby fire 15 years ago got me into understanding how important it is to get timely information, which later actually led me to taking on and lead what we call crisis resilience, launching in search SOS alerts, which now had billions of views on natural disasters and COVID and other things.

Yossi MatiasGUEST
We launched it actually about 10 years ago, and at the time I discovered that this is all great.

Yossi MatiasGUEST
Actually got some notes about various incidents that people say, "Hey, thanks for doing it.

Yossi MatiasGUEST
You saved our lives." But discovered also that the most devastating natural disasters in terms of people impact, which are floods, were not helpful.

Yossi MatiasGUEST
Because in order to be helpful, you need to actually warn people ahead of the flood.

So how important then is the long-term research that is detached from the need to innovate right now?

Yossi MatiasGUEST
Research, again, as I mentioned, the best research is research that is motivated by either a need that you already know or by exploring the art of the possible.

Yossi MatiasGUEST
And when you think about exploring the art of the possible, it's motivated by saying, well, now, if I manage to solve it, that is going to unlock things that are actually going to be meaningful for my business, for my products, for capabilities.

Yossi MatiasGUEST
To your question, the importance of long-term research is greater than, is, is more than ever.

Do you anticipate that it's going to lessen the need for researchers or are we gonna have more?
