Yari

Alongside the katana, the samurai carried the shorter wakizashi, useful in close quarters where the longer blade became cumbersome, and, in earlier centuries, the yumi, the asymmetrical Japanese longbow, which was the dominant weapon of mounted samurai warfare long before the sword claimed its central symbolic role.

For battlefield engagements, the Yari spear and the curved Naginata polearm extended a warrior's reach and proved devastatingly effective against both mounted and foot opponents.

But it was the armor that most defined the samurai's physical presence and most shaped the tactical reality of any encounter.

Tei Yoroi and later Tosei Gusoku armor Intricate assemblies of lacquered iron and leather plates, laced together with silk or leather cord, offered genuine protection across the chest, shoulders and limbs.
