They lost family photos stored in the Yandex Cloud, small businesses lost their accounting databases, people lost their emails.

It was all physically vaporized.

And what was Yandex's official response to their millions of customers who just lost everything?

Around one in the morning Moscow time on Thursday, Yandex Cloud Service Channel posted a short note about in an availability zone called RU Central 1B and asked clients to move their workloads elsewhere if they could.

At that moment, the Ryazan region was under a drone alert.

By morning, Yandex confirmed to RBK that after a drone attack, a fire had broken out at its data center in Sasovo, a small district town in the Ryazan region, and the whole site had been shut down.

Gosuslugi, the state services portal, Russian Railways, Avito and VKontakte, of course, what's remaining of Ozon and Wildberries, and two banks too, VTB and Alfa Bank, the mobile operators and the websites of, well, basically everyone in the media sphere, RBK, Ria Novosti, Kommersant, Vedomosti, Interfax, everyone.

My favorite victim is Cian, the biggest property portal.

In 2020, Cian chose Yandex Cloud as its disaster recovery site, the place you go where your main system dies.

Then it moved all 500 of its microservices there.

The attacks disrupted the public cloud provider Yandex Cloud, as well as some of the internal Yandex services and third-party platforms that depend on them.

Internet watchdogs say users in Russia have subsequently had problems accessing everything from email to food ordering and making payments on Yandex Pay.

Both sides of this conflict have targeted data centers, with Russia attacking at least six Ukrainian data centers in late September, disrupting internet access for thousands.
