Mm-hmm.
Christopher Thomas PlantHOST
54:17
I liked XCOM when I was a little kid, before even the reboots.
Christopher Thomas PlantHOST
54:21
I don't usually play these sorts of games, but we talked about it on Rescue, and that kinda helped me figure out what is going on.
Christopher Thomas PlantHOST
54:29
Being third person pretty regularly, actually walking through these worlds, even if it's not, like, the most impressive [laughs] like, your animation is, looks like you're kind of, like, walking on a slip and slide, it puts you in it just enough that you don't feel like you're just managing a spreadsheet.
Christopher Thomas PlantHOST
55:09
They just show up now and then.
Christopher Thomas PlantHOST
55:11
So you can basically break the game whenever you put these people into it, and it feels so, so awesome.
Christopher Thomas PlantHOST
55:18
Also, it's much, like, the world itself is much smaller than XCOM, uh, the battlefields are, and the fights are just faster, and they're a lot more hand-to-hand in the way that they use the Force.
Christopher Thomas PlantHOST
55:29
They don't do a good job of communicating it early in the game, but it's a lot about pushing people around the map, like knocking them off of platforms, throwing, literally throwing them off of the map and really roughing them up versus just, you know, like spamming them with bullets that 70% of the time may or may not hit.
Simon CardyHOST

...
Simon CardyHOST

I might, maybe I'll do a hard run at some point, but, uh, I'm kind of, on one hand I'm liking it 'cause I'm s- I'm getting through the game, which in XCOM games I don't normally get to near the end of.
Simon CardyHOST
44:00
But, um, I also feel I'm kind of missing part of the story is, I always feel like part of this story is you're meant to lose some of your team and have that heartache.
Jack GashHOST
44:07
Yes.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
42:28
smothered in pan spit and with its Elizabeth Lyon tube station signs in Hindi, is it? Or Punjabi? One of the two.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
42:38
Whichever squiggles come up at the bottom of my screen when I'm fighting some alien horde in XCOM, I don't want it.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
42:47
And I'm allowed to call that colonisation, and I'm allowed to advocate for some decolonisation.

Thank you very much.
John RicciardiHOST

Is that, so is that the one where-
Mark MacDonaldHOST

XCOM, Star Wars
John RicciardiHOST

...
John RicciardiHOST
40:57
I read there was a bunch of drama about the devs?
Gabe De LeonHOST
41:20
...
Gabe De LeonHOST
41:20
it is the best Star Wars game we've gotten in a long time, and it's a pretty solid tactics game.
Gabe De LeonHOST
41:27
And I like XCOM 2 and I like XCOM and, and, and the, the Fire Emblems and all that stuff.
Gabe De LeonHOST
41:31
Like, this game is so magical and to have all of that nonsense happening on the background of it-
Sarah FoxHOST
2:27
You're very smart and talented and you've done this job to completion.
Sarah FoxHOST
2:30
Is this the XCOM guy? So we talked to our handler.
Sarah FoxHOST
2:32
He wanted us to just finish.
Sarah FoxHOST
2:34
He was like, come back to the mainland.
MatthewHOST

If a new player came to you and said, should I get 5 Parsecs or should I get Planetfall? I mean, I'm assuming your answer is kind of, it depends, but like, what would you kind of, how would you, how would you break it down for them?
Ivan SorensenGUEST
12:14
Uh, well, my answer is you should get both and also pre-order XCOM.
Ivan SorensenGUEST
12:18
Um, But no, I think Parsecs is still the best starting point because it's both a more open-ended, but it's also just a simpler place to start.
Ivan SorensenGUEST
12:34
Planetfall is, in hindsight, phenomenally... ambitious, uh, because there's just so much there.

28 MINS LATER

Ivan SorensenGUEST
40:58
Um, so I can talk about, um, there's two, well, there's a bunch, uh, cause I was trying to work like 12 projects.
Ivan SorensenGUEST
41:07
Um, so, but because the overlords did start talking about it.
Ivan SorensenGUEST
41:12
So obviously XCOM is happening.
Ivan SorensenGUEST
41:15
Um, based on the old computer games.
Harvey SmithGUEST
55:32
Let me just throw out a couple.
Harvey SmithGUEST
55:34
XCOM was very pivotal for me.
Harvey SmithGUEST
55:37
And you said Eurojank.
Harvey SmithGUEST
55:39
I've literally never heard that term before, but I would honestly apply it to Deus Ex.
Harvey SmithGUEST
55:49
I think Zach McClendon wrote an article at some point about why a certain level of jank was required in the brilliant Bethesda Softworks games, because... you could either choose to polish things entirely or focus on saying yes to the player and letting the player do something wild, in which case the game gets broader and broader or deeper and deeper and you don't have time to polish everything, right? And so that was kind of the ethos of Deus Ex as well.
Harvey SmithGUEST
56:22
It's like, say yes to the player, let them explore, let them do crazy things, but it means we probably won't have time to polish it because we had a 30-person team or something like that, you know, so...
Harvey SmithGUEST
56:34
And XCOM was definitely unfriendly, lots of friction, a little bit of jank.
Harvey SmithGUEST
56:42
The UI was mind-blowingly bad.
Chris RobinsonGUEST
10:38
I even mentioned it in the comment.
Chris RobinsonGUEST
10:39
I was like, not even Zero Company? It's just Star Wars XCOM.
Darren WadeHOST
10:43
Yeah.
Chris RobinsonGUEST
10:44
But I think it
Michail KatkoffHOST
13:35
So overall, like very much a, a clickbait.
Michail KatkoffHOST
13:38
Uh, and it ends in referencing the Star Wars Zero Company article, where basically that studio is shut down despite releasing a game that is, you know, such a fan favorite 'cause based on XCOM and, and it has good reviews.
Michail KatkoffHOST
13:52
And yes, that is sad, but it misses the journalistic aspect of it, is that the most likely reason why that studio was shut down is, of course, because maybe it didn't reach the high financial target of a company or a studio launching a Star Wars game.
Michail KatkoffHOST
14:05
And secondly, most importantly, it's probably because of the law affair that the founders were having against each other.
DaveHOST
34:04
But usually utilize near the end, where I was getting closer to a platinum run.
TrevorGUEST
34:10
Yeah, I mean, as we've been talking, I can't believe I didn't mention it up front, but XCOM is maybe one of the most important games that fits into this category and how it handles death in its gameplay.
TrevorGUEST
34:23
I mean, I'm pretty sure everybody in this room maybe has made a team in XCOM named after all of your friends and family.
TrevorGUEST
34:33
I definitely did that at least once and I definitely did one where they were all WWF wrestlers.
TrevorGUEST
34:38
where the undertaker ate shit in the last mission i was like no it's anchors down but yeah you feel it different when you know that it's they're gone especially in x-com because there's the experience factor where you have to like raise up each of your individual troops and when you lose one of them that's been around for a long time you feel it like it puts a hole in your roster that actually like you feel emotionally bad, but also mechanically it hurts.
TrevorGUEST
35:08
And yeah, and XCOM, I think maybe it was the first XCOM, not the second one, but there's a mind control thing that all the last bosses in that game do on the last fight of the game that just virtually guarantees that you're going to lose somebody.
TrevorGUEST
35:24
And I remember that sucking really bad because I had a no-death run going.
TrevorGUEST
35:28
I think that's kind of how I've always played XCOM, is try to try to get through every run without losing anybody.
