Topher BurkePANELIST
53:16
Do I trust you to treat this maturely? Yes.
Topher BurkePANELIST
53:21
The other thing is absolutely an X card.
Topher BurkePANELIST
53:24
available at all times.
Topher BurkePANELIST

And then I always incorporate some element of aftercare into a horror game in the event there's any bleed or somebody comes up with a trigger they didn't know they had and it took them 30 minutes to figure out that they're now a little bit distressed.
CamillePANELIST
57:41
So you're feeling a bit more fragile or you've just got other stuff going on.
CamillePANELIST
57:44
You have not had any sleep and things kind of get to you more than they could at other times.
CamillePANELIST
57:48
And so just, yeah, like how Topher was mentioning about always having the X cards and having those kind of like, as Mav was saying, kind of, meanwhile, in-game checks and things as well, and just viewing it as kind of an evolving aspect of games, particularly games that are covering sensitive topics is important.
CamillePANELIST

I guess, yeah, the other thing I just wanted to say was that I think we, well, I at least get drawn to horror because it can be quite explorative and cathartic in some ways but then also balancing that with not actually being distressed like I think we all kind of said after our Francis Dorothy recording that all of us kind of cried at times but I personally because I was playing with people that I knew that I played with before and because Mav had set things up so wonderfully in terms of like looking after ourselves and pacing ourselves that it was a very cathartic experience and um and that like it brought me a lot emotionally i mean it's not therapy let's be real here it's not quite the same i i am a therapist now so i can say that newly qualified but i do think that there can be particularly into being able to explore these kinds of materials with people that you have that kind of trust with maybe not someone you've just met for the first time obviously but you know having those kind of um yeah there's rules and those kind of outside barriers in place to be like let's make this as safe as possible and then being able to kind of explore that um collaboratively and be looking after each other and having that sort of ethos um you can go to some really amazing places in terms of feeling real scared or maybe real sad or um and kind of uh yeah being able to experience those things in a in a safe environment

I do a lot of convention run games, one shots where you literally just sat down with people for two, three hours or something.
Paul BaldowskiGUEST
42:11
You may never play a game with them again, but let's make this the best possible experience by treating each other as human beings and saying, you know, just have a couple of minutes to say, look, this isn't going the way I'd hoped because... and don't maybe make it very personal it doesn't have to be about that person they will probably realize it's about them but you know this is this is the sort of game that i want this to be this needs this is about this is a horror this is a cosmic horror this is a body horror this is what whatever approach you want to be and be quite honest about it um and mechanically It means because as a game master or whatever storyteller, whatever approach here you've got, you sat down wanting to use X system to run Y adventure.
Paul BaldowskiGUEST
43:05
you need you need the secret source of zed of actually say you know having a group who understands those two things and maybe that means that in that in that situation you can run um a pathfinder horror game or or whatever because you've said in advance That's what we're looking to play.
Paul BaldowskiGUEST

And it's not going to be, I'm not going to, I'm going to kind of ease back the notion of heroics.

7 MINS LATER

StephGUEST
50:57
You know, and those are moments that can shape a character.
StephGUEST
51:00
Like you struggled to do something, but you've done it just.
StephGUEST
51:03
And then later on, it turns out that was a terrible idea because X, Y, Z, now there's a monster in the closet.
StephGUEST
51:08
So, you know, you can build character moments out of those mechanical outcomes.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
49:08
Let's discuss anything that you do not want in the game or... that you may be uncomfortable with, let's talk it out for 20, 30 minutes, whatever you need to do.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
49:19
And then during the game, we use the X card.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
49:22
So either an X in the chat, X on the screen, whatever it is saying, stop, no, I'm uncomfortable with this.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
49:30
And we move around it, like in some cases, just completely rewind, say, all right, that didn't happen.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
49:35
Rewinding, this is going in a different direction now, or just cutting around saying, okay, now we're going in a different direction.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
53:52
We are going to move around it because it doesn't matter if that was the case at the time.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
53:56
We are not going to traumatize our players.
Rina HaenzeGUEST
53:58
I've had to use the X card myself in situations where characters would be degrading to my character just because, oh, that's what I would have done at the time.
MordriganHOST
72:42
However, the stakes quickly spiralled out of control.
MordriganHOST
72:46
You may either become a gambler or gain the missing X fingers, where I rolled D6 to determine how many fingers you are missing.
MordriganHOST
72:54
You know what? I lost enough.
MordriganHOST
72:55
I lost...
