World Conference against Racism 2001

Was this a gradual mission drift or did particular individuals, our movements, consciously redirect them?

You know, first of all, we're now talking, I mentioned the Durban Conference, there were 1,500 roughly organizations represented.

So this is a huge industry and now it's much bigger, of course.

There are close to 6,000 organizations that have UN representation.

Well, it's really important because I'm not sure how many of your listeners are familiar with the reality is that 25 years ago in August, the United Nations held a conference in Durban, South Africa.

And this conference was called the World Conference Against Racism.

And at this conference, it was determined, at this United Nations sponsored conference, it was determined that African people had been victimized by crime against humanity, that child slavery, colonialism were attacks on human rights.

And human rights crimes are something that have no statute of limitations.

And so you get all the kind of political missions in New York, but all the human rights missions in Geneva.

Well, in 2009, it was a revisiting of the World Conference Against Racism.

But by then, and under the Obama administration, a reminder that it doesn't matter what your identity is, right? The Obama administration has made it clear that there will be no discussion of Palestine, Zionism, or otherwise at the World Conference Against Racism.

And so as Palestinians do, and the Palestinian organizations at this time are doing, right, it's Badeel, it's Al-Haqq, it's, you know, I don't think it was Al-Mizan at the time, but it's the organizations in the Palestinian NGO network that are organizing and they're having side events.

If we can't be included, we'll do our own side events.

Israel, Canada, Australia, Argentina, and Micronesia opposed the resolution.

Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon previously criticized the Durban Conference, stating it became a platform for antisemitism and hatred of Israel.

Meanwhile, on the political front in the United States, a New York gubernatorial debate saw Republican candidate Blakeman challenge incumbent Governor Hochul over antisemitism and alleged ties to Mamdani.

Turning to Israeli domestic politics, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces challenges in uniting right-wing parties as an election approaches.

South Africa strikes again.

And from, you know, Durban, the home of the, uh, uh, Durban Conference, uh, on Racism, in other words, the most anti-Semitic, two, two anti-Semitic conferences, et cetera.

But she also is a horrible person in her own right, um, for being on- in the UN.

I mean, this is like a twofer, 'cause it's the UN and the Nobel Committee.

It was a, it was a great day, and, uh, we spent some time on this program actually talking about that.

And of course, the 25th anniversary I'm referencing is the, the, the, the Durban Conference at 25, but I take your point.
