Usually that was done in reverse.

The song was based off of a German folk song called Muss I Denn, Must I Then, in 1960 that he made into a song called Wooden Heart in 1961.

He released it in the UK, and it hit there, but he never released it in the United States.

Later in '61, Bloomington, Indiana native performer Joe Dowell recorded the song, some of it with German lyrics, and on August 28th, 1961, it was the number one song in the country.
