Asheville and Buncombe County's apartment market has shifted after more than 6,000 multifamily units opened since 2020.

Vacancies rose and average rents fell about $100 since late 2024, while complexes offered rent incentives.

In North Carolina, Asheville City Council has voted 5-2 to terminate its contract with licence plate reader provider Flock Safety, ordering the immediate removal of 11 municipal cameras.

According to ABC news station WLOS, the resolution directs the city manager to suspend all data collection, access and sharing, while staff conduct a comprehensive review of local surveillance policies.

And a Federal Appeals Court has upheld Hamtrank City Council's ban on flying Pride flags on municipal property, ruling that the city is permitted to restrict displays on its flagpoles to official government flags.

Michigan Advance reports that the decision affirms the dismissal of a legal challenge brought by two former commissioners following the council's 2023 resolution to prohibit political, religious and ethnic flags across city grounds.

Officials say those homes will incorporate disaster resilience.

Asheville unveiled a unified design yesterday to rebuild public parks and infrastructure along the Swannanoa River damaged by Helene.

And UNC Asheville researchers have found a way to fight a bacterium considered a leading cause of antibiotic-resistant infections.

Their four-year study found that disabling a specific enzyme allowed normal bacterial growth in lab conditions but made the bacteria less able to withstand hostile conditions or destroy red blood cells.
