Witch-king of Angmar

I know we're talking about the show here, but George R.R. Martin often likes to allude to great works of fiction.

In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, there is a character known as the Witch-King of Angmar.

During the Siege of Gondor, the Witch-King of Angmar is slain by Eowyn, daughter of Eomund.

Begone, foul Dremelaic, lord of Carrion.

Leave the dead in peace.

So enslaving these homeless spirits was something Sauron did, and other necromancers were in his host and he taught them what he knew.

Obviously, the classic example of one of Sauron's followers enslaving and commanding these spirits is the Witch-King of Angmar.

The Barrow-Whites, the hobbits encountered in the Lord of the Rings, were evil spirits sent there by the Witch-King.

But what examples do we have of Sauron himself using these homeless spirits? Quite a few, actually.

In the Silmarillion, we read of Sauron that he "...was become now a sorcerer of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of werewolves." So he was a master of shadows and phantoms, which sounds pretty necromantic to me.

The power of the One Ring and its relation to the Nine is obviously multi-layered.

Technically, their lives were unnaturally extended and their bodies incorporeal rather than them having died, but we definitely have a situation where Sauron's magic has bound their spirits to this plane when they otherwise wouldn't be.

When Merry stabbed the Witch-King, he was cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will." The Nazgul were undead and under the control of Sauron the Necromancer.

But there was, like...

There was like Sauron, the Witch King, and then you had Sam, and you know, different ones or whatever.

And I'm like, Sam, while yes, he was the MVP, I feel like his anxiety might not be great to sit next to on an airplane, you know? That's a

good point.

That's a tough one for me because I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan.

This is the Witch King of Angmar helmet behind me.

But I'm also a huge fan of the Doom universe and of the horror movie Event Horizon.

I have several wearable Doomguy helmets in my office.

Sorry, I have it backwards.

And Eventually, Arnor broke into three pieces, and due to infighting and mismanagement, as well as attacks from the Witch-King of Angmar, they eventually got decimated, and now it's just Gondor.

And that's why there's a lot of ruins of Weathertop, of Anamenas, of Fornost, as well as some others.

And...

I forgot that he was in the first one you mentioned, though.

He's the Witch King.

Or the Night King.

So by about TA... 1300.

One of his greatest servants, the Witch King, who is the chief of the Nazgul, his first lieutenant, is given a mission.

Because there's not much information on this, but the mouth of Sauron is also a lieutenant.

And the relationship is very peculiar.

You can see... one being kind of the political one and one being the military might one like one being a chief of staff and such anyways there's this whole thing there's three characters that are kind of his his strongest uh commanders there's the witch king there's kamun and then there's the uh the mouth but anyways the witch king yeah he's his first lieutenant he tells him
