Wise Up

Uh, the songwriter Amy Mann recorded a song called Wise Up for the film, but Crowe felt it did not fit.

According to Crowe, he had used Mann's original version, a simple demo piano in a scene in which Jerry Maguire is moving through an airport.

Uh, Mann's final version was larger, more lush, and a more, more of a personal epic, and quite incredible, and suddenly it was too big for the scene it was meant for.

That's how good my number one is, in my opinion.

Uh, uh, number two is Aimee Mann, "Wise Up" from Magnolia.

[singing] It's not what you thought.

I mean, the experience, I saw that, I'm pretty sure it was opening weekend, 'cause I know it was packed.

I can't remember.

But he listened to them over and over again, and lyrics from the song appear in the script, and there are references to the songs through the script.

And in the middle of it, as a, almost a love letter to her as well as being a great dramatic moment in the movie, every character stops what they're doing or, uh, basically pauses in the middle of what they're doing, and they lip-sync to the entirety of one of the most beautiful songs ever written, "Wise Up," which, incredibly sad song, as is typical [laughs] of Aimee Mann.
