Now, um, at the time, Fazal Mahmood and his family, they were unsure where they were gonna end up, whether he wanted to play cricket at all, and Abdul Hafeez Kardar organized for him to get a job as a policeman in what would then be Pakistan, which was considered a very good job in return for playing cricket for him.

So Hafeez Kardar got him to play cricket for Pakistan, helped him get to that point, and in 1955, Fazal Mahmood became the first-ever Pakistani to be included in the Wisden's top five cricketers of the year.

Interesting point, Matthew Engle, who's obviously former editor of Wisden, we co-wrote the official history of the club some years ago, and he's been obviously following Northamptonshire longer than I have, and we were talking about this afterwards, and he said he thought it was the best achievement that Northamptonshire had ever managed, on the basis that these days, given the financial models and all the rest of it, for a small county to win a major trophy is now so much more difficult than it probably was.

And I think it was a very interesting call that he thinks that winning the Blast in 2026 ranks potentially higher than any of the other achievements that Northamptonshire have managed, I suppose with the possible exception of finishing as runners-up in 1912 and only the eighth season in the county championship.
