[door opening] In 2007, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals upheld his convictions.

It found, among other things, that police had properly read him his rights, that the evidence was enough for a jury to convict him beyond reasonable doubt, and that the judge had weighed the right factors in sentencing him.

But the case had exposed a tension that the verdict did not resolve.
