But the branches of our own tree of American liberty have been nourished by many very deep-growing roots concerning which history is sometimes entirely silent or to which it has been given but niggardly praise, and we can, perhaps, spend a few moments profitably in tracing one rootlet of our liberty tree which has not been exactly overlooked by history, but which from the present generation of Americans has attracted little or no general attention.

I was born in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, in the very school district where the leader in the events I am about to describe was the settled pastor in the Congregational church, in what was then called Chebacco Parish and which is now, since 1819, the little town of Essex.

Mount Mercy shows off its new program to the public with its first home game Saturday, a loss to William Woods out of Missouri.

It wasn't the final score the Mustings had hoped for, and the forecast was gnarly.

We had a lot of parents drive up from California, Texas, and Florida to come see our first home game, so it was surreal.

A lot of community support is all you can ask for as a new program.

The Mustangs put forth a valiant effort against Heart of America Athletic Conference opponent William Woods out of Missouri.

Mount Mercy, who is 0-3, held a 26-16 lead in the fourth quarter before two late touchdown connections between Colson Baum and Jalen Becerra sealed the win for William Woods, who are 2-2.

It was an electric inaugural home game for the Mount Mercy football team.

William Woods, Mo, had a touch more firepower late.

In a back-and-forth battle between Heart of America Athletic Conference opponents, William Woods, 2-2, 13 unanswered points in the final 10 minutes, were the difference in a 29-26 win at Bussey Stadium.

The Mustangs held a 26-16 lead with 13.59 remaining, but couldn't prevent two late touchdown connections from Owls quarterback Colson Baum to Jalen Becerra.

Mount Mercy sophomore quarterback Alex Estrada completed 17 of 46 passes for 291 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns, three passing and one rushing.

Now it's becoming a reality.

The Mustangs have worked and waited about two years for the opportunity to bring football to campus and will make their official home debut Saturday at Bus Stadium in Cedar Rapids, hosting William Woods, Missouri at 1 p.m. Mount Mercy started its first season on the road.

They were competitive with Grinnell, dropping a 16-13 decision.

The Mustangs moved to 0-2 after a 43-6 loss to Baker Kansas University last week.

The game, because of rain in the forecast, rain and thunderstorms tomorrow night, got moved up from 6 p.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow.

So if you were planning on attending Mount Mercy's first home game in program history against William Woods tomorrow, that game is now a 1 p.m. kickoff here in Cedar Rapids.

I know Coe College is playing at the exact same time against UW Oshkosh, my alma mater.
