The attack was to begin on the right, with William Bate's division, who again would start a battle in confusion, although here Bate found himself wrestling with the opposite of the problem he'd faced two days earlier.

Now he was thinking he was going to plunge into the Federal left rear, but instead found his division confronting a line of Union infantry and guns where there wasn't supposed to be one.

Since the situation was radically different than what was contemplated in his orders, Bates sent a message to Hardy asking for new instructions, but he never heard back.
