And then my parents entertained a lot.

And there were several directors that came from John Huston to William Wellman to, and Billy Wilder was one.

I didn't know how much I would meet Billy Wilder, and he would sort of know who we were as kids and stuff.

But I was too young to actually say, oh, Ace in the Hole.

And, and, and, and I love that it kinda just drops you into the culture of the hospital right away, and it kinda takes you from sort of vignette to vignette before you get introduced to our main character.

And, yeah, I think that's a tribute to William Wellman, who was such a great director at keeping things moving.

His range is amazing because before this, he does Public Enemy, and he gets-

I sort of knew what the classics were.

Uh-huh.

But I kind of wanted to tack towards what were the most f- if I'm doing forbidden cocktails, what's the most verboten, right? And, uh, William Wellman, uh, you know, is really, uh, credited a lot with, you know, having the Hays Code come down because, um, he does Public Enemy, which was really violent for its time.

Um, you know, now it doesn't seem that crazy, although it has a real violent, visceral violence to it that-

The wife, uh, his wife is portrayed by Sissy Wellman, the daughter of William A. Wellman, famous director wh- for whom, uh, Clint worked early in his career in Lafayette Escadrille.

[horse neighs] [birds chirping] There is obviously a certain menace, uh, in the atmosphere on this seemingly peaceful day.

[horse neighs] [hooves galloping] And what he is aware of is that, uh, his farm and... has been raided, and, uh... [birds chirping] [gentle music] He must, uh, take what action he can, which is impotent in this particular situation.

I do want to skip ahead really quick, so just kind of keep sort of the bad guys going.

William Wellman Jr., he is the son of William A. Wellman, the famous film director who, for example, The Public Enemy with James Cagney, he directed that.

That guy's his dad.

But he's done some stuff, mostly like character actor work, but, I mean, he's still alive, and he did some CSI in 2007, you know, and he was on... alias and whatnot so he's acting for a while uh the pretender a lot of people were in the pretender a lot of people if you make it into the 90s as a character actor you're gonna go through the pretender at some point

Louise Brooks starred in another Pabst movie called Diary of a Lost Girl.

She went on to star with Wallace Beery and Beggars of Life by William Wellman.

Before Pad Norris Boxe, She was in that and several other films.

But Pandora's Box is kind of like her it.

Today's review is on Battleground.

Battleground, directed by William A. Wellman and written by Robert Pierroche, is a gripping World War II drama that takes us into the heart of the Battle of the Bulge.

And then Public Enemies is, I think it's William Wellman directed that, who did Wings and stuff.

And he's a great director.

But those two are great.

On June 24th, 1937, Mary married her third and final husband, actor and bandleader Charles Buddy Rogers.

Screenwriter Hope Loring had recently scripted William Wellman's Wings film.

and she thought the young male lead of that movie might be just the thing opposite Mary in her movie My Best Girl.

Hope engineered a cute meet for the pair, leading Charles Rogers to the front door of Mary's studio bungalow without telling him whose door it was.
