In nineteen ninety-one, a scholar named Will Roscoe published a book called The Zuni Man Woman, and We-Wha's name went out into the world again.

Around the same time, indigenous people from many nations gathering in Winnipeg chose a new English word to describe people like her, a word that could stand across hundreds of different traditions: two-spirit.

The old word, lhamana, was never lost.
