Will Rogers

Jerome Dizzy Dean is coming up.

In the hotel lobby this morning, Will Rogers, he needs no introduction, said, how's the old arm, Dizzy? Said, well, it's all changed.

There's a white dog watching a pitch, but it's all gone.

When there's a ball game and any pitching to be done, I'm the pitcher.

He swings it to fall back.

Strike one.

And when Dizzy Dean asked Will Rogers how he was getting along, particularly over Russia.

He said, well, Dizzy, they had me play on the outfield.

You have to look at those elements, and boy, voice is an important part of it.

I represented Ron Schock for years, and boy, vocally, that guy, he was just, It was like Will Rogers.

It was like, you know, like, what's his name? The old Dodger broadcaster.

Vin Scully.

You know, I always like wrapping these up with just a quote that's meant so much to me.

It's a, it's a Will Rogers quote.

And he said, the biggest problem in America is not what people don't know.

He goes on to say the biggest problem in America is what people think they know.

I would agree with everything you'd say, and I would give you, uh, the, the same idea in a small capsule.

Uh, it's a quote from the cowboy humorist from the twenties and thirties, Will Rogers.

He once said, and I'm gonna get the quote not quite right, "Some men learn by reading, some men learn by observation.

The rest of us have to pee on the electric fence for ourselves."

Wiley Post had been riding it in a rubber pressure suit in a plywood, Lockheed Vega, nearly a decade earlier, in 1935.

Post was developing ideas for Alaskan bush flying when he partnered with the humorous Will Rogers on an exploratory flight north.

The aircraft they were using was a hybrid, a Lockheed Orion fuselage mounted on a set of floats that added considerable weight at the nose.

Several experienced Alaskan pilots who looked the combination over had concerns about whether the engine up front was adequate for what those floats were asking of it.

The engine quit shortly after liftoff.

The airplane went straight down into the water.

Will Rogers was 55 years old.

Wiley Post was 36.
