He described all this with detachment, which made it all the more chilling.

It's January 1987, the middle of a snowstorm, a plow driver's working the northbound rest area off Interstate 91, up near White River Junction, and there's a car that's just sitting there, a green BMW.

The door's cracked open, snow blowing in, there's blood inside, and there's nobody around.

The car belonged to a 38-year-old woman named Barbara Agnew.

Their planes were in such terrible shape, constantly broken down, that they couldn't pass.

So a completely different wing had to pack up their own spare parts, fly them to a halfway rendezvous point in White River Junction, New Hampshire, and hand them off so the inspected wing could scavenge the parts just to make their planes functional enough to pass the test.

It highlights the desperation of maintaining a flawless facade.

But while the bombers were evolving in the skies, a far more terrifying technological shift was happening in the ground.

One I'd set up as, like, White River Junction, the other I set up as, uh, Brattleboro.

And we, [laughs] we would operate the layout.

My dad would come home and he had a lot of patience to accept it.

so, so, so tell us why CP Rail, how that, that all developed for you.

The, the, yeah, so probably some of my earliest recollections, getting back to my dad's layout and, and kind of as mentioned, taking over his layout, but there was, there was some really interesting articles back when I was probably, I was about nine or 10 years old in the early '80s- On, uh, the Conn River lines.

I think Ben Bachman had done it in the Trains magazine, and it was just a great- It was actually a multi-part article that talked about Central Vermont, CP Rail, and Boston and Maine operations on the Conn River line, which is essentially a line that runs from Springfield, Mass up to White River Junction, and then splits.

One line goes north to the CP Rail at Newport, and the other line goes to Central Vermont, goes to St. Albans.

Thirty-four miles and over, fare one way.
