The White Panther Party, founded by Kevin Henry in Detroit in 1970, saw the MC5's chaotic shows as the perfect soundtrack for anti-white supremacist messaging, and vice versa.

The band adopted the Panthers logo and even let them hand out flyers after gigs.

You could almost hear a riff on stage that shouted, Rock can be an act of violence against the system, with no room for ambiguity.

Their 1970 debut kicked out the jams, captured that rawness in a way few albums did at the time.
