Duke wedges a chair in front of the bathroom to lock him in.

And he turns on some white noise on the TV and tries to sleep.

He's already been awake for a couple of days at this point, but he doesn't really fall asleep.

Oh, my gosh.

TVs used to just have white noise built in when you turn on static.

That's so...

I didn't even think about that.

Free white noise.

[gentle music] Today, white noise machines and sound apps abound for those in search of a better night's sleep.

Background white noise can help some people's sleep quality by minimizing the length of time it takes them to get to sleep.

So what exactly is white noise, Don?

It's a consistent signal that's produced at equal intensities across all frequencies, Yael, at least across those that we can hear.

When we're trying to fall asleep, white noise can create a masking effect that blocks sudden changes in sound.

That's interesting because usually our brains only arouse us from sleep when a sudden rupture of sound creates an inconsistency in the room or somewhere nearby.

So white noise helps to cancel out those bursts of noise.

That effect benefits people most when they're settling down to sleep.

It's like when you're driving to work, it's like you could pass.

You do pass so many stores and doctor's offices and logos every single day that you would have no idea you see because it's just white noise.

Right.

So and I would say probably about 80 percent of markings, probably like the 80, 20 year old, 80 percent of marketing misses this.
