At the end of that film, during the closing credits, the music that they use is a song called The Promise by When in Rome that came out in 1988.

And I loved it.

I thought it was such a beautiful song.

All right, we've reached the midpoint of our countdown of the top 10 songs from 88 that didn't reach the top spot but deserved to.

Coming in at the number five spot, one of the coolest songs from that year, The Promise by When In Rome.

The Manchester England Trio went in Rome.

They picked their name from the proverb, went in Rome, do as the Romans do, of course, after thinking about cultural differences during a trip to the Eternal City.

I mean, listening back, there's that new wave synth pop flavor that makes it such an 80s classic, but you know, it somehow maintains a freshness like you've never heard a song quite like it.

There are several covers of The Promise, including one by New Found Glory, but really the most interesting interpretation, I'll link to it below, is the one by Sturgill Simpson from 2014.
