This week we're going to be looking at whelping box temperatures.

Pretty much, to summarize this, if you have good heat for your puppies, it's warm, their body is going to survive a lot better if they're having to struggle to keep their body heat up.

So the calories they're taking in are going to be burning to help keep their body heat up instead of using it to grow and a lot of times some of the signs of this not being hot enough would be of course them snuggling up to mom not only nursing but once they get through eating they stay connected to mom they stay up against mom to keep their body heat up understand something in nature When puppies are born, mom usually has a den that is going to be heated, of course, because she's in there.

Sometimes you've heard of this as puppy fading syndrome, to where they just start getting weaker and weaker and weaker.

And I think a lot of that has to do with the temperature.

and the whelping box so we need a temperature when they're first born between 90 and 100 degrees if we can make the area smaller kind of like a den it's going to hold the heat better some ideas for this would be having a heat lamp of course the first thing everyone says about a heat lamp is Well, make sure it doesn't fall, make sure it doesn't hit the puppies, make sure it doesn't burn the puppies, it can get too hot, all those type of things.

Yes, yes, and yes.

Any really earlier than that, since dogs are pregnant for only a short period of time, the viability of those puppies at too much shorter than that 59 days is usually not going to have a good outcome.

But it allows you to calculate those dates so you know when to expect puppies, to have your mom prepped in her whelping area, to start doing temperature checks prior to when her whelp date is going to be.

And then you can record all the information of how many males, how many females, when they were actually born.

Again, like I said, there's going to be a lot of information that you're going to want to keep track of.
