So the director of Wheeler Dealers daily drove one of these f- uh, for many, many years, and one time we were on a shoot and, uh, his transmission went out, and it, it, it stranded him, and we were all pretty surprised.

When he went to sell, when, when he went to go sell that car, uh, he reran the CARFAX, and at the time it had about 100,000 miles on the odometer.

I think where car TV has struggled in, well, since Top Gear perhaps lost Clarkson, Hammond, and May, is, is around how you handle the demands of TV versus what the enthusiast audience actually wants.
Jez MedingerGUEST
17:15
So the kind of TV shows that get made, whether it's the Wheeler Dealers or the Richard Hammond's workshop, or whether it's other sort of restoration stuff, they're sort of more Discovery Channel kind of level budgets, but they're also trying to play to a, what's, the TV audience, which isn't exclusively car enthusiasts, and that means that they're trying to create a narrative that fits a certain structure that works for TV, and there is a certain degree of confection that is required in terms of scripting it to work around ad breaks, to work around false jeopardy, which is the documentary makers', you know, necessary evil to retain interest for a TV audience.
Jez MedingerGUEST
17:55
And what you get with these TV shows is that they are, it's fundamentally inauthentic because the structures that are imposed upon them by the regards of TV more generally doesn't necessarily suit- ... what the enthusiast wants when they want to watch something like this.
Jez MedingerGUEST
18:12
Whereas what is being made on YouTube and online is a much, even if the production values are far lower and it's just a bloke in his shed with a GoPro, if you wanna see a barn find, you wanna see Johnny Smith resurrecting a car in a barn find, well, what you're watching there is completely authentic.
