And then every so often that, that, uh, ice dam would break, and then a monumental amount of water would flood down the Clark Fork basin through Northern Idaho into Washington, and like flood out the whole like Columbia River basin.

And so it made this, it, it's shaped the landscape from Western Montana through Washington.

Um, but like if you've ever been to a reservoir or something, there are like this kinda stairstepped shoreline from all the different high water marks.

And so all of that still exists on all of the hillsides that aren't forested-

... a big highlight for sure, especially because- For some reason, they are really s- sparse in Western Montana.

Like, I don't run into them very often, so to, to luck into one with a group was fantastic.

I'm a big hunter, so I'd go out west when I was a kid with my dad.

East and western Montana, the Pacific Northwest.

And then when I was in the Marines, I did a lot of camping and backpacking.

What I will tell you is I've hiked in a lot of different parts of this country and The stories that I've heard along with the experiences that I've had, especially in the Pacific Northwest and in Western Montana, and you get into the mountains and the woods, hardwoods.

If you hear another voice outside of your group, turn around and walk the other way.

It's not just about the relative humidity being so low, but the winds are kicking.

We're talking about wind advisories that stretch up into Western Montana.

Some of those gusts could easily go over 45 or even 55 miles per hour.

So just watch that.

I think anyone who, when you hear the word Montana, you just picture Yellowstone, right?

Right.

Yeah, beautiful.

And that was really the driving force behind the development in the early, early days of the Northwest Food Hub Network.

That network is the formation of three individual food hubs, one in Western Montana, the Western Montana Growers Co-op, one in Spokane, Link Foods, and one north of Seattle in Mount Vernon, the Puget Sound Food Hub Co-op.

Three of those food hubs spread out across a fairly large geography, something like 800 miles between them.

Yet, because they were at the scales they were operating at, they were close enough to kind of peek over the fence and see, hey, what are they doing over there? How'd you get that product? Could I get some of that? And so in the early days, I think it was actually at a conference in 2020, right as COVID was breaking out.

So because these hubs knew each other and could trade, and because we had identified a sale opportunity for them, they started moving products around.

And the same thing goes for salmon from the west.

being moved over to the eastern side of the state and then to western Montana.

So it's a really exciting now, you know, in 2026, we have food hub networks that span Maine to South Carolina.

The storm ushering in the cooler air will also spread scattered rain showers and thunderstorms across the interior Northwest and Northern Rockies.
