You can also see this in the sort of kind of McCarthyite Red Scare, where a, a lot of sort of you would describe them as liberal fellow travelers of the, the communist movement were blacklisted, were targeted, were shown to be suspicious.
A.J.A. WoodsGUEST
14:31
What is quite curious about their choice of the Frankfurt School is the fact that many of them, and I think this is one of the sort of critiques that comes from Perry Anderson's big, quite influential essays on Western Marxism, they weren't really embedded in left-wing political parties or the communist movement as a whole, and in a way represented a kind of retreat to the, to the universities, where it is possible to l- uh, at least do work that's inspired by Marx on a sort of sociological level, take some insights from the philosophical tradition that informed Marx and that was informed by Marx to analyze certain changes in so- in society and, and in culture.
A.J.A. WoodsGUEST
15:17
But really, it, it does represent a form of Marxism that isn't necessarily too interested in actually getting more engaged in politics or fi-figuring out sort of political strategies and things like that.
Matthew RemskiHOST

It's skeptical.
Isabella AidarGUEST
33:14
So absolutely, anti-imperialists should support them in this struggle.
Isabella AidarGUEST
33:17
And, you know, I think a lot of Western Marxists, they struggle with this because, you know, they understand Russia.
Isabella AidarGUEST
33:23
Russia is a state capitalist nation.
Isabella AidarGUEST
33:25
It's not a communist country.
Adam ToozeHOST
47:08
And Hobsbawm, in some sense, reflects that.
Adam ToozeHOST
47:11
But unlike more serious theoreticians in the Western Marxist tradition of the 20th century, he never really tangles with violence.
Adam ToozeHOST
47:19
the deep implications for understanding the dialectic, the philosophy of history that might follow from that.
Adam ToozeHOST
47:23
He's no Adorno.
Adam ToozeHOST
47:27
He avoids the real abyss that people like Walter Benjamin will see, deriving from that insight about the role of violence and the state.
Adam ToozeHOST
47:41
possibility of barbarism ultimately as the trajectory of global development.
Adam ToozeHOST
47:47
That I think is quite alien to Hobsbawm and he doesn't have much connection with that Western Marxist scene.
Cameron AbadiHOST
47:55
Yeah, I guess it's important to emphasize that that last volume, Age of Extremes, was published after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

And after
Jörg PohlGUEST
9:19
it failed, he wrote History and Class Consciousness, Geschichte und Klassenbewusstsein, which is regarded as one of the founding stones of the Western Marxism, of the New Left.
Jörg PohlGUEST
9:35
And the Frankfurt School and the student movement and the Situationist International were greatly influenced by this work.
Jörg PohlGUEST

although Adorno criticized him harshly, particularly on his later aesthetic writings.
Jörg PohlGUEST

And so alienation is the process and reification is the...
Jörg PohlGUEST
11:05
No, alienation is the result and reification is the process.
Jörg PohlGUEST
11:12
But I don't know if we need to make this more precise, but this is quite important for what the new left and the Western Marxism were focused on.
Jörg PohlGUEST
11:30
on the critique of the everyday life by Henri Lefebvre.
Ben NortonHOST
28:24
In fact, I highly recommend a very important book that was recently published by Gabriel Rockhill called Who Paid the Pipers of Western Marxism as part of the intellectual World War.
Ben NortonHOST
28:37
In this book, Rockhill shows in devastating detail how the US government, especially the CIA, supported anti-communist Western so-called left-wing intellectuals because they were useful propagandists in the first Cold War.
Ben NortonHOST
28:53
A good example of this is Herbert Marcuse, who published a book called Soviet Marxism: A Critical Analysis, which was very influential in the nineteen sixties because Marcuse identified as a Western Marxist, even though he opposed actually existing socialism, even though he opposed the national liberation struggles in the Global South.
Ben NortonHOST
29:17
He demonized Global South Marxists and revolutionaries as so-called Stalinists and authoritarians and totalitarians.
Ben NortonHOST
29:24
By the way, his book on Soviet Marxism was funded by the predecessor of the CIA, the OSS, which later became the CIA in nineteen forty-seven.
James LindsayGUEST

They literally do and behave the same way.
James LindsayGUEST
42:22
So the leftism, it's not extractable at this stage of Western Marxism.
James LindsayGUEST
42:27
The, again, it's not strictly speaking anti-Semitism.
Matthew TobeHOST
42:31
Right.
James LindsayGUEST
41:56
Also, like I remind you, Angela Davis isn't the only one who went to Palestine and trained and I don't know which side she was on I don't know if she was on the Jordan side or the Gaza side but she went to Palestine and trained how to be a better communist activist and a better street radical with these people and so they're like the tactics are totally they're indistinguishable because they're intertwined They literally do and behave the same way.
James LindsayGUEST
42:22
So the leftism, it's not extractable at this stage of Western Marxism.
James LindsayGUEST

James LindsayGUEST

AlinaHOST

That's a really good book that predates that one.

I mean, of course, Who Paid the P- um, [clears throat] Who Paid the Price of Western Marxism, I had a brief overview look at it, but I haven't sat down to properly read it.

It is a great introduction for people who want to understand this, right? Joe GettyHOST

Uh, James Lindsay, what links the WNBA's current woes, the Smithsonian National History Museum becoming an anti-American museum, and people insisting that two plus two can equal five? What is the common thread?
James LindsayGUEST
23:02
You guys probably call it woke, but the answer is modern Western Marxism.
Joe GettyHOST
23:09
Right, based on, in, in large part, critical theory, which you talk about in Cynical Theories.
Joe GettyHOST
