West Pakistan

It seemed dangerously overloaded to me.

After my arrival in West Pakistan, I was lodged for an overnight stay in a modest hotel.

A very friendly tourist taxi driver joined me at dinner and asked if I would buy him a drink.

He explained that it was a Muslim holy day and that no alcohol could be sold to a Pakistani.

Oh, that'd be right.

You know how there was East and West Pakistan? Yes, yep.

There was a North and South Rhodesia.

Yeah, you're spot on.

You know, when Paul Harrison, George Harrison made his concert with Ravi Shankar about Bangladesh and my friend and all that.

You know, American people didn't really know what awful stuff went on back by Nixon and Kissinger and stuff and West Pakistan in the Bengalis.

And it was really, really bad.

So Ram Dass was very upset about it.

[laughs] Bit of, bit of difference.

On the 6th of September, India invades West Pakistan, beginning the Indo-Pakistan War, while the following day, China announces that it will reinforce its troops on the Indian border.

Meanwhile, the following week, over 400 young men respond to a small ad in Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter looking for three members to form the world's first manufacturer band with the already cast Davy Jones.

Triggered by the flight of 10 million Bengali refugees from what was then known as East Pakistan, the third Indo-Pakistani War, which broke out in 1971, brought about the creation of the independent Bangladesh.

After the Pakistani surrender, the refugees returned, and a smaller, though still considerable, number of Pakistanis were driven out of Bangladesh into West Pakistan.

The end of the Vietnam War led to the expulsion of 250,000 ethnic Chinese Hoa...

They produced their own tea in Bangladesh, in East Pakistan.

But when partition came, obviously West Pakistan, or Pakistan today, lost all its production.

because it was sitting the other side of

India,

So I just think in terms of culture, we do get some really interesting places.

And for instance, I mean, if you think that Bangladesh was East Pakistan or West Pakistan, they were supposed to have the same culture.

But of course, they haven't at all.

Completely different people.

In his message of condolence, Jinnah described Gandhi as quote, "...one of the greatest men produced by the Hindu community." There was still much to do to consolidate the Pakistani state and foster its economic development, but Jinnah was mortally ill with both tuberculosis and lung cancer.

He nevertheless made his first ever visit to Dhaka, the capital of East Pakistan, where on the 21st of March he delivered an address in English to a crowd of 300,000 Bengali speakers to promote the unity of West Pakistan and East Pakistan, asserting that Urdu was to be the sole national language.

In the event, East Pakistan retained its linguistic identity and in 1971 would gain its independence as the nation-state of Bangladesh, the geographical division between the two nations being impossible to overcome after independence.

In June 1948, Jinnah and his sister Fatima went to Quetta in Balochistan, where the cleaner air appeared to restore his health.
