Right, and that is exactly what a woman named Christine Ross was doing.
speaker_4HOST
She was with her dog, Ruka, walking in this undeveloped area of the city known as the West Mesa.
speaker_5HOST
Which is really just a lot of dirt and scrub brush out there.
speaker_4HOST
Yeah, just open space, but then Ruka starts digging at something in the dirt.
speaker_4HOST
So Christine immediately contacts the police, and that single phone call, it rips the lid off of what would become the most harrowing, massive, and ultimately frustrating investigation in Albuquerque's history.
speaker_5HOST
Without a doubt.

This horrifying reality is documented extensively in a piece from Grunge titled The Untold Truth of the West Mesa Murders.

And looking through the source material for today's deep dive, you quickly realize this isn't just about finding a single bone.
Bobby CapucciHOST
And you mean to tell me that this Balderas character can get up there and talk about his investigations and how he cares about what's going on? Please.
Bobby CapucciHOST

Bobby CapucciHOST
Eleven dead girls, still nobody caught.
Bobby CapucciHOST
Something stinks in New Mexico.
Steve StocktonHOST
This is the story of a man who perished in a void surrounded by the very silence he spent his entire career maintaining.
Steve StocktonHOST
Now, the case of the West Mesa Bone Collector is one of the most significant and haunting unsolved serial killer investigations in United States history.
Steve StocktonHOST
While many of these cases involve a signature left at the scene, this case is defined by a landscape of death, a literal mass grave hidden in the high desert of New Mexico.
Steve StocktonHOST
This provides a stark, sun-bleached horror.
Steve StocktonHOST
The twist in this case is the realization that the expansion of the city was the only thing that brought the truth to light.
Steve StocktonHOST
Otherwise, those 11 women would have remained part of the desert forever.
Steve StocktonHOST
The West Mesa Bone Collector remains a ghost, likely either deceased or incarcerated for other crimes, while the families of the known 11 still wait for a name to attach to their loved one's demise.

It's the West Mesa Bone Collector.
Karen KilgariffHOST
Oh, fuck.
Bobby CapucciHOST
These women were prostitutes.
Bobby CapucciHOST
So as we've seen in other cases we've studied here and looked at, West Mesa, Long Island, when the victims are prostitutes, not enough resources are used because of the stigma.
Bobby CapucciHOST
You know, oh, they're prostitutes, they're leading a dangerous life anyway.
Bobby CapucciHOST
That's not how it should be.
11 MINS LATER
Bobby CapucciHOST
Yes, I agree with that.
Bobby CapucciHOST
This person has also killed before these recent victims were found, and he will be compelled to continue his murderous ways in the future.
Bobby CapucciHOST
And again, look, I know it's a gigantic leap, right? But if you look at what happened in West Mesa, you look at what happened in Long Island, and you look at what happened in Atlantic City, I mean, I know, again, it is a leap, but there's just something about these three specific areas where these hookers were found murdered the way they were that I just can't shake.
Bobby CapucciHOST
Kelly's associate, Frank Adams, came up with the moniker for the killer, the Eastbound Strangler.
