And in our final PodX story, two of the most widely used weight loss drugs have been linked to a rare but potentially deadly brain disorder.

Researchers in Israel examined a hundred and ninety-six thousand adverse event reports and identified fifteen cases of Wernicke encephalopathy, a neurological condition caused by severe vitamin B1 deficiency.

The condition appeared disproportionately in patients taking GLP-1 medications, and most cases involved two drugs in particular, semaglutide, sold as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus, and tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound.

The suspected mechanism is straightforward.

GLP-1 drugs slow digestion and suppress appetite, and the resulting drop in food intake, along with side effects like vomiting and rapid weight loss, can leave patients short on vitamin B1, which the brain needs to produce energy.

Wernicke encephalopathy is hard to catch.

Its cla- classic symptoms are confusion, trouble walking, and uncontrolled eye movements.

But only a small fraction of patients show all three, and as many as eighty percent of cases go undiagnosed.

And deficiencies with B1 are cognitive impairment.

So this is memory loss, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and something called Wernicke or Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome.

So this is a neurological disorder often associated with alcohol abuse where this thiamine deficiency will damage brain regions involved in memory and motor control.

Okay.

When heavy drinking occurs, that acetaldehyde just sits in the GI tract, directly mutating the DNA of the mucosal cells.

And yet, despite all this systemic body failure, one of the most tragic long-term outcomes loops us right back to the brain, driven by a nutritional deficit, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

This one is just devastating.

Chronic heavy drinkers often develop a severe deficiency in vitamin B1, or thiamine, because alcohol destroys the gut's ability to absorb nutrients.

It's a remarkable way of using the drug's own mechanisms against it to break the cycle of chemical dependence.

It really puts into perspective how intricate this substance is.

I mean, we started with ancient Sumerian religious ceremonies and ended up dissecting the neurochemistry of GABA, enzymatic bottlenecks, and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

The core truth is that ethanol is far more than a cultural artifact or a social lubricant.
