Wendy Welch

Oct 15, 2026

1:16
So, Wendy, tell us about this week's top dog.
1:18
Yeah, this morning, Sam, we have Athena.
1:21
Athena is about seven and a half years old.
1:25
We think probably a pit bull terrier mix looking at her.
1:29
She's just under 50 pounds and she's a sweet girl.
1:33
We have had her actually a couple of times before.
1:36
Well, her owner struggled with some various things, homelessness and some illness, and eventually just kind of determined life circumstances were too tough for her to keep Athena, which is so sad because Athena is a very, very good dog.
4:55
For instance, Wendy, tell people about the Compassionate Feast.
2:26
So Wendy, how do you get kittens? How do they come in? Where are, where have they come from?
2:32
Yeah, great question.
2:34
Yes.
2:34
A lot of them are oopsie litters, right? Uh, lots of strays.
2:39
Um, so fortunately people will bring them to us and then we can spay/neuter and make sure that it doesn't go past that.
2:44
But this year has been a bumper crop year for some reason of kittens.
2:48
Um, and so we have had a zillion kittens.
6:52
[laughs]
2:20
So tell us about this week's Top Dog.
2:22
This week we have Winnie.
2:24
Um, Winnie is about six years old, we think.
2:27
About 50 pounds.
2:28
Maybe an Australian Cattle Dog mix.
2:31
Total mix.
2:32
There, you can see some, some bits of Australian Cattle Dog in just the kind of her mannerisms and a little bit in her face.

5 MINS LATER

7:45
What about the Compassionate Feast?
4:39
You guys do it all the time, right, Wendy?
4:41
Yes.
4:42
Thank you for mentioning that, Sam.
4:44
Yes, absolutely.
4:45
We are here for people, you know, whether, whether you're struggling to keep your animal because of financial means or some, you know, im- immediate urgent need, something like that, you know, we have a pet food pantry.
4:57
We have an emergency harbor program, you know, for folks out there.
5:02
Um, we have a whole bunch of volunteer resources, you know, to help people keep their pets in their homes or, right, if that is just not gonna be feasible, totally understand, too, and we will help find an animal.
6:55
So Wendy, when folks check out the events calendar, what will they see this time?
2:43
So tell us about this week's top dog.
2:45
Oh yes, this week's top dog is named Toad.
2:49
And Toad for good reason, because Toad likes to sploot and then splay his legs out, which is hilarious.
2:56
So he looks like a little froggy.
2:58
He is a little, and he's a little squatty kind of dog too.
3:01
Although he's about 60 pounds, he packs it all in.
3:04
He's a little on the shorter end.
5:26
So, Wendy, when they go to the events calendar this time, what will they see?
4:31
Who is this week's top dog?
4:34
Yeah.
4:34
Queso is a, pretty much a pup himself, actually.
4:36
He's only 10 months old, um, about 50 pounds.
4:39
And he came in to us as a stray found wandering around, uh, Superior Township, uh, and brought in by an officer about a month ago.
4:48
Actually, um, tomorrow, it'll be one month that he will have been with us.
4:51
And he is Mr., um, uh, uh, uh, Mr.
7:12
You have any events coming up?
1:40
All right, so tell us about this week's Top Dog of the Week.
1:43
Yeah.
1:44
Ira, this week is Oats.
1:46
Oats is about a year and a half old, about 66 pounds, and who knows without doing a DNA test, but I'm guessing a pit bull-terrier mix.
1:56
Kind of white with a little brown on his face.
1:59
Anyway, he's a cute dog.
2:01
Sad story, he had to be surrendered by someone who loved him so much, but just health conditions-wise, they could no longer take care of Oats.
4:32
And with that, Wendy, let's come back one more time and tell us about this week's Top Dog of the Week.
6:02
When they do that this time, Wendy, what will they see?
6:05
see?Yeah.
6:07
Well, of course you'll see the Love Train Puppy Adoption Day happening tomorrow.
6:10
So those puppies will be available for adoption beginning 11:00 tomorrow.
6:14
You'll see Rescue Reading, which is happening on Saturday, but it is sold out, so folks, look out for upcoming times for that happening.
6:22
But you will also see Little Paws Toddler Time coming back.
6:26
So the, as we wind down the camps for the summer, we're bringing back Little Paws Toddler Time, and that's happening next Saturday.
8:11
With that, Wendy, uh, let's come back around and tell the folks one more time about Blueberry Pancake, or Blue, this week's Top Dog of the Week.
7:44
So what will they see when they look this time?
7:46
Yeah.
7:46
Absolutely, yes.
7:48
Uh, well, this Saturday we have a low-cost vaccine clinic.
7:50
It is sold out, I believe, but we will be having another one mid-month.
7:53
So just wanna highlight that for folks.
7:55
If you have a cat or dog or multiple cats and dogs, take advantage of our low-cost vaccine clinic.
9:14
Tell the folks one more time about Karma.
2:39
I hear you
2:39
... is his owner.
2:40
Yeah, right? Our, his owner fell on hard times.
2:44
Um, and I think back, you know, like I, my first dog, I was going through a really rough period and my dog needed a ton of attention.
2:51
Was going through separation anxiety, all that stuff, and I had to do a whole bunch of...
2:56
Like, he was my project, and he brought me out of a complete depression.
3:00
And I, you know, I think this dog is the same kind of thing.

6 MINS LATER

8:54
Tell them all about Capri Sun.
1:50
What's the process for them getting their Love Train puppy?
1:54
Yeah.
1:54
Yeah, yeah.
1:55
So the Love Train is a life-saving transportation program.
1:58
So you know, we know people here are interested in adopting puppies.
2:03
They don't wanna go to a pet store and unwillingly support, uh, any, any puppy mills.
2:09
So we know they want to rescue puppies, but there aren't a whole lot in Michigan because, thank goodness, we have a good spay/neuter program going.

12 MINS LATER

13:51
I don't know what to do about it.
1:20
You know, people and their pets outside this time of year, uh, especially Wendy, need to be very, very mindful of keeping their pets hydrated and cool.
1:31
Yes.
1:32
Yes, for sure.
1:32
They don't sweat like we do, right? We sweat to cool ourselves off, and we can actually cool ourselves off much faster than they can.
1:40
So that's why, you know, when we talk about things like cars and cars heating up so fast and dogs being inside them, that's why it's so dangerous, 'cause they can't cool themselves down that quickly.
1:51
Um, so they sweat through their paws and things like that, and that's, you know, you'll notice them trying to, you know, get to a cool spot.
1:57
Um, and, uh, you know, tile floors and things like that can help.
5:07
... motivated or am I off base with that?
2:34
Uh-huh.
2:34
Um, and yeah.
2:36
And totally will, like, catch treats in any, like, no matter how you throw a treat, [laughs] it doesn't matter.
2:43
Uke will catch it.
2:44
Um, so he's, like, an astounding, astounding, uh, uh, athlete.
2:49
Um, he's, he's also really amusing, too.
2:52
A kid, um, uh, recently, uh, gave him, uh, her, her ice cream.
5:34
Uh, and before we go, Wendy, tell the folks if they look at the events calendar when they head on over to HSHV, what will they find?
1:51
So tell us about this week's top dog.
1:54
Oh, this week it's Ashoka.
1:57
Ashoka is about a seven-year-old dog and a hound mix.
2:05
And he is, excuse me, she is about 51 pounds and she is tall.
2:12
She is a pretty dog.
2:15
Got those floppy ears of a hound, black and brown and white.
2:20
kind of mix that lots of hounds have, the total desire for food and sniffing stuff out that hounds are.
4:52
So when they check out the events calendar this time, what will they see?
2:28
So tell us about this week's top dog.
2:31
You guys, this week I have Dolly.
2:33
Dolly is a 14-year-old.
2:35
I was going to say that she's a yellow lab beagle mix because she looks like a very short lab, a yellow lab, and has some beagle tendencies to her, too.
2:49
So she's cute.
2:51
She's about 43 pounds.
2:53
Like I said, she's about 14 years old, so she's a senior lady.

5 MINS LATER

8:16
Tell the folks one more time about Dolly.
2:04
We
2:05
think maybe a foxhound mix.
2:07
He is about 62 pounds.
2:11
He's about five years old.
2:13
We're guessing he came in as a stray, so we're not 100% sure.
2:16
He's got that tricolor look, you know, when you think of a beagle, you think of the brown and black and white that lots of them are with that blanket back of black on his back.
2:27
And he stands pretty tall, you know, being 62 pounds.
6:10
So when people check out the events calendar this time, what will they see?
1:23
I'm gonna brag.
1:24
[laughs] Oh, man.
1:27
Yes, we have oodles of puppies, um, in our shelter right now to the tune of, like, 26 actually.
1:33
Um, and a lot of them look to be hound mixes, you guys.
1:36
So lots of floppy ears happening and waggy tails happening at the Humane Society Huron Valley.
1:42
If you're interested in rescuing a puppy, of course, you know, check out our Facebook later today.
1:45
We'll be posting some pictures.
2:35
And sometimes people, "Hey, you know, is there a special process to adopting a Love Train puppy?" So if someone wants to adopt a Love Train puppy, what do we have to do?
3:32
Tell us all about this week's top dog.
3:35
Oh my gosh, this top dog is a is a seriously top dog.
3:39
It's 78 pounds.
3:42
Marlo is about two and a half years old.
3:45
Black, brown and brindle kind of coloring and Marlo came to us in March because his family had had a new baby and sometimes this happens.
3:58
The only dog is no longer the only baby and things become difficult in the household.
4:04
They really tried.
7:17
What will people see when they look at the
