Wendover

Wild and goofy and just you never know what you're going to see or who you're going to see out there.

And then the next several years I stayed in Wendover.

It's a little Burning Man-esque.

Yeah, yeah.

But my first time, my first time there, the thing that I really, really was happy to do is that I'd heard from a lot of people that you got to see the sunrise, but be on the salt flats when you see it.

And, um, Autumn and I got there, you know, we drove across the 80 there where it's straight for like 90 miles or whatever.

And, We got into Wendover.

The very first person I see is Larry Erickson, a car designer from Detroit.

Well, then he did send us, like, shortly after that, some screenshots and videos of him playing some bonuses at the local slot machine in Wendover, Utah.

Mm-hmm.

So we're like, okay, so we're still set in our ways, and we think to ourselves, "How...

Honestly, this is one of the greater ideas we've ever had in our ch- show chat.

Um, Justin just threw out there, Dan has to accompany Junkie to Wendover.

If you're up on the bench of the Wasatch, you can see the whole lake in the valley there.

But to get to the actual hay-like crusted salt surface of the West Desert and the Bonneville Salt Flats, you need to drive an hour to the west towards Wendover, Utah.

So take the drive out I-80 towards Wendover and let me know when you're here.

[laughs] So two days ago, I go to Wendover, and whenever I go to Wendover, I want a, um-

For people who don't know, Wendover is, like, a, a city that lies right on the border of Nevada and Utah.

It's a casino city.

Where do you go to do that?

Go out to the Bonneville Soft Flats in Wendover, Utah.

Nice.

Yeah, I was there last year.

Well, it happened in August of, um, uh, of, of '96.

Um, that's when I think before that time or around that time, Bob Bigelow started getting news from, uh, Shelley Wadsworth in Pioche, Nevada, which is close to Wendover, and Wendover's on the border of Utah and Nevada.

Mm-hmm.

And she's reading the Deseret News newspaper, uh, found out that a g- reporter named Zack Van Eck had been reporting on the Sherman family's-

So for this to have any meaning to you, I'm going to give you a quick, hopefully short overview of what happens on the Bonneville salt flats in Utah.

And that's over in Wendover, Utah, not too far from the Nevada border.

Back after World War II, there was an association called SCTA, Southern California Timing Association, and they started what they call land speed racing.

And there's a big event that goes on every August.

There is one exception, and that exception is, what is this county? It might be Tooele.

Because Tooele County goes all the way out to the border, correct? Like all the way out to Wendover? That one has had an increase.

Every other one has had a decrease.
