Welland is pushing the provincial government to update a nearly three-decade-old lease agreement for the city-owned courthouse on East Main Street.

Mayor Frank Campion and Chief Administrative Officer Jessica Riddell said the existing agreement signed in 1999 limits the city's ability to recover actual operating costs and does not account for inflation, life cycle replacement requirements, capital renewal needs, increasing utility costs, or modern asset management practices.

The city's concerns were raised with Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General during last month's Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference in Ottawa.
