Awesome.
MattHOST
57:15
Well, for my Phantom Corner, I'm bringing a game that I will hopefully also have a review up on the Funny Games Patreon soon for, but it's a game I finished this past week called Well Dweller.
MattHOST
57:27
If you are not familiar, Well Dweller is an indie game by... developed by Kyle Thompson and with a score soundtrack by Eric Thompson.
MattHOST
57:36
They're a duo, but he's a solo dev who did games like Crypt Custodian and Islets.
MattHOST
57:42
I believe I talked about Crypt Custodian when I played it on this pod as well.
MattHOST
57:46
but he makes Metroidvanias.
MattHOST
57:48
All of his games have been Metroidvanias, and Well Dweller is no exception.
MattHOST
57:52
This is more in the vein of a Hollow Knight as far as challenge goes, but not as challenging.
Aaron SpearsHOST
45:28
I'm almost done with it.
Aaron SpearsHOST
45:30
And I played this other game called Well Dweller, which was like an independent thing.
Aaron SpearsHOST
45:34
It was like two guys made it and it's like a little bird and it's 2D Metroidvania style game.
Aaron SpearsHOST
45:41
And it was excellent.
BenHOST

manager
Deadbeat PunkHOST
118:55
yeah it's a comfort game and it saves on the hand you've been playing so you can just quit out of it and go back to it whenever you want fantastic game for that just boot it up whenever you're stuck being bored at work and i also played well dweller which is like almost a cozy metroidvania and i was really enjoying it and then gears came out and i dropped it like a hot shit and yeah sacked
BenHOST
119:20
it off yeah
Deadbeat PunkHOST
119:21
for no reason i was really enjoying it a bit an easy side but it's a lovely world and yeah visuals great but I was either going to finish that, then go to Gears, which wasn't fucking happening.
Mike MinottiHOST
70:59
um all right anything else like i said i'm just like well just keep playing
Jeff GrubbHOST
71:04
uh uh here's the kingdom and i keep helping her out with that and i still really enjoy that uh kind of like she keeps finding stuff that i never found found now like uh she'll find some secrets and i'll be like she's like hey can you help me figure out like where this is leading me to i'm like oh i never did this so continues to be a great way to explore that but yeah you're playing well dweller dweller you said how's that going
Mike MinottiHOST
71:23
yeah just been really liking it just feels good uh very good like metroidvania pacing which was like something with say a mio earlier in the year i was kind of feeling like i think like the metroid pacing is off here yeah i'm not getting upgrades very often i'm kind of wandering around uh It's not just
Jeff GrubbHOST
71:40
like the carrot on the stick was almost not there.
Jeff GrubbHOST
71:43
It's like the thing that like draws me forward.
Jeff GrubbHOST
71:46
Yeah, I'm not getting them as fast, but I'm also not feeling the draw to get them in Mio.
Jeff GrubbHOST
71:51
Whereas in Well Dweller, it's like, oh, I can just see all these things everywhere and I can just feel that I'm getting closer to that next upgrade that's going to unlock this whole new way of exploring this world.
Jeff GrubbHOST
72:02
Boy, what a good game.
James FarleyHOST
88:06
And then the whole series has kind of gone in weird directions, especially when Konami kind of decided they weren't going to make games anymore.
James FarleyHOST
88:12
and you know it was then given off to like other studios and stuff but that's what's happened again here because this like the studio that's made this is um is the same that did dead cells and i forget their name uh at the moment but um that so they they've been put on this and it does feel quite a lot like dead cells i'm not i mean i'm not that far into this at the moment and i probably shouldn't have played it directly after playing well dweller Because, although they're not the same game, like, obviously they're not, they're really different, like, tonally, the style is, like, you know, is very different, but they are still exploration, you know, like, adventure games, but Castlevania is heavily, heavily, like, combat-focused, like, much, much more so than World Dweller was, which I'm not enjoying so much, honestly.
James FarleyHOST
88:57
like it's also got it's been infected with that whole like dark souls kind of style as well where it's like repeatedly having to do things over and over again because because it's really hard and all that kind of stuff and that you can right mitigate this you know like in these options like you can you know like with the accessibility options you can like you know tone down like the difficulty and like make it so you hit harder and that bosses are not so strong and all that kind of stuff but i don't know you see i like that i like the fact that you can do that but then the core game of like what they were intending is not for me what i feel like a castlevania game is because for me castlevania has really always been more about the exploration and the combat is good it's always been really fun and there's always been lots of you know different systems like particularly like where they had the card system in other games where you had to like mix up cards and you know have like different combinations to improve attacks and stuff which it's got all of that But this feels so much more like a Dark Souls kind of experience than any of the others so far.
James FarleyHOST
89:55
And it's too dark as well.
David TurnerHOST
94:02
One of them is Well
Sean BellHOST
94:03
Dweller.
Sean BellHOST
94:04
Well Dweller.
Sean BellHOST
94:05
Have you heard of this game? It's very good.
SeanHOST
40:27
No matter what kinda games you're into, there's a few big ones out there, you know? And it's like, yeah, if you're into all different kinds [laughs], then it's just overwhelming right now.
SeanHOST
40:39
Um, but yeah, like, in terms of Castlevania, I was, again, thinking and comparing to Well Dweller, and it's...
SeanHOST
40:45
You know, I feel like Well Dweller was just a smoother, instantly kind of addictive experience.
SeanHOST
40:52
I mean, it, it was a little slow to start, but once you're into it, it's, you know, kinda nonstop.
SeanHOST
40:57
Whereas Castlevania, there are still moments of, you know, I, I... you know, waves of enemies or sections where I'm, like, having to do them a few times over and over.
LonoHOST
120:03
I need to get back to Wolverine because I'd like to finish Wolverine before Phantom Blade Zero comes out.
LonoHOST
120:07
And then I'd like to go back to Well Dweller.
LonoHOST
120:09
And then there's obviously Castlevania that people are trying to convince me to go back to because I just didn't like the way that it felt.
LonoHOST
120:16
I keep hearing that PC is cheap and easy, but there's apparently not a quick answer.

8 MINS LATER

LonoHOST
128:27
Or is it more than that? It's a million dollars.
LonoHOST
128:30
That's right.
LonoHOST
128:32
I played a bit of Well Dweller this weekend.
LonoHOST
128:34
It's super weird.
BrandonHOST
40:10
Hmm.
EugeneHOST
40:13
okay well then I guess it's my turn right yeah okay so the real only game that I've been playing I mean outside you guys nobody wants to hear about like the stupid you know what I've been playing a lot of is Super Nintendo games but just like a lot of bits and bobs of those but again like don't need to talk about like the old retro games that I've been spending time on my Thor with the real game that I want to talk about is Well Dweller we talked about that the last time This is the Game Pass game.
EugeneHOST
40:44
It's kind of slow burning it because I just kind of want it to last.
EugeneHOST
40:48
It's got some spookiness to it too, so it's great to play this time of year.
BrandonHOST
43:15
I'm wondering how much of the RPG elements are in it.
EugeneHOST
43:20
Yeah.
EugeneHOST
43:21
In Castlevania or in Well Dweller? Yeah, in the
BrandonHOST
43:24
Castlevania one.

Jacob PriceHOST
1:11
Well Dweller, I think, is easily one of the best games of this year.
Jacob PriceHOST
1:14
So if you like Metroidvanias, definitely stick around and listen to that full conversation.
Jacob PriceHOST
1:19
There's a lot of great insight in it.

11 MINS LATER

Jacob PriceHOST

Jacob PriceHOST
12:05
So stick around and you'll listen to me talking with Seth.
EugeneHOST
35:13
