The hunt for Resendiz continued for over three months, but the killer remained elusive.

By the spring of 1999, he was back in Texas, this time in the small city of Weimar.

On the night of April the 30th, he entered the home of Norman and Karen Cernich.

The Cernyks were both asleep in their bed.

There is an advantage to this as an offender because if you're not carrying weapons around with you, then you're not carrying evidence around with you.

The escalation in Dr. Benton's case, he hit her with a smaller figurine, and she fought back.

This case with the Cernyks in Weimar, there was no fighting back.

He made sure with that first blow, but he didn't want to fight.

Two months later, Dr. Claudia Benton was sexually assaulted and killed near tracks outside of Houston.

In April of 1999, Reverend Norman Cernick and his wife Karen were murdered in their Weimar, Texas, church.

The railroad tracks ran directly behind the facility.

These victims spanned all ages, all backgrounds, the weapons all varied, but the pattern was undeniable.

So 46-year-old Norman J. Simrick and his wife, 47-year-old Karen Simrick, was killed with a sledgehammer.

Nothing looked out of on May 2nd, 1999.
