Claude Code for Growth: Complete Masterclass with James McAulay
J
29:11James McAulayGUEST
So I don't know how much you know about SEO, but there's a Google tool called Lighthouse measures how quick your website loads.
J
29:18James McAulayGUEST
You used to have to go to PageSpeed, their website, to get a test, export the test, save it, give it to the agent, and then ask the agent to make the change.
J

But this uses the Lighthouse CLI.
J
29:31James McAulayGUEST
So it basically just tests it for you, pulls all the data, If it's inside your repo, so I'm doing a sort of outsider test on your website, but if I run this inside my own code base, it immediately finds ways that we can speed up our website, which actually matters quite a lot for SEO and helps with conversion.
Erika Braeger: If Machines Can't Read It, You Won't Show Up
E
2:01Erika BraegerGUEST
I would say the number one is page speed as well as technical debt that has ballooned from URL updates.
E
2:11Erika BraegerGUEST
So with PageSpeed, in the past, I witnessed clients kicking it down the road, kicking it down the road, and now we've reached the point in machine readability where if the page is over a certain size, it's much more difficult for the machine to read it, and if it's over a certain size, it's much more difficult for it to load on a mobile device, for it to load on desktop.
E
2:36Erika BraegerGUEST
And it could really fracture the user experience.
E
2:41Erika BraegerGUEST
And that just, it's a snowball effect.

I wonder some of the... indications that you point to if a client's like, does it really matter how fast my site is? Are there any studies that you use to underpin that or any statements from Google or any statements from LLM tools that you kind of surface and say, hey, this is evidence X, this is evidence Y, this is some of the citable reasons why we focus on page speed.
E
4:05Erika BraegerGUEST
Sure.
E
4:05Erika BraegerGUEST
With PageSpeed, a lot of what I'm doing is a comparison.
E

It's a combination of using Google's guidelines for user first content, user first for the site.

Well, you named it, so you get to be right.
C
4:06Chris CoyierHOST
You can tell us about it, but I'll just preface it by saying it's like a web app for web performance, watching your site to make sure you don't screw it up.
C
4:14Chris CoyierHOST
Is that right? Or how much does it do a lot more than that these days?
B
4:17Ben SchwarzGUEST
Yeah, I mean, it does a few things.
B
4:19Ben SchwarzGUEST
So yeah, it's a web performance suite.
B
4:22Ben SchwarzGUEST
It's built for teams, built for people who are maintaining a site or multiple sites.
B
4:29Ben SchwarzGUEST
And you can use it to test your site with synthetic tests.
