Waterloo Sunset

It was, well, let's take a break from recording and go record.

But it was done in the spirit of fun and not a ton of thought was... um put into the selection i mean we recorded some songs we didn't use um and then there were a few tracks i think it was inspired by the fact that um the dbs had cut a version of waterloo sunset that was never really finished and i was always a big fan of it and finally one day i said guys do you care if um can i just finish this up and put it out under my name and everybody said sure um so i was looking for a couple of tracks to frame that and I kind of accidentally recorded, you know, a bunch more.

Well, that definitely is a centerpiece, I feel, the Waterloo Sunset cover.

Cool.

At least, I mean, I thought one thing, like, so from listening to your prior record of your original stuff that we talked about last time to, like, hearing you approach, like, a record of, like, covers, it's really...

So I don't know if it was true on all of these.

It might have been true at one time.

I mean, I learned from Waterloo Sunset and I learned from Hey Bulldog, but the time of learning from him was in the past.

... to me, that reminds me a lot of probably my favorite Kinks song, Waterloo Sunset.

In Waterloo Sunset, he's looking at the world from a more humble point of view, the hospital overlooking Waterloo Bridge, whereas now it's, like, from a elevated, seven stories high kinda thing.

So this is almost like the kind of, uh, Hollywood remake of Waterloo Sunset in a way, isn't it?

[laughs] He's in show business.

Yeah, yeah.

Well, it's number, it's number six just now on Spotify as far as I can see.

Okay, so it's not in the visible top five luckily.

For me, this song is all about being kind of on top of the world, looking down at the people, going about their business and knowing that you're separate, but being kind of content with that.

And to me, that reminds me a lot of probably my favorite kink song, Waterloo Sunset.

To me, that's the kind of the theme of this album.

And Supersonic Rocket Ship has... rocketed up in the last five or six years if you look at the kink spotify numbers it's up there it's rocketed right up let me just check that is that right well it's number it's number six just now in spotify as far as okay so it's not in

the visible top five luckily

And my thoughts on the kinks and my feelings about them changed a lot in doing this book because this early stuff was illuminated in a different way.

I mean, my takeaways from it were, how could Ray be so sure of You Really Got Me? I mean, we all know it now, but how could he be so sure and how did he get his way? And once he got his way, third time out, that led to so many other things third time versions of songs not all of them successful but lola third time on that one i believe drive-in three times yeah um you know there's the waterloo sunset i think is three times as well yeah so you know he and sometimes when you do get to hear the different versions the differences are more subtle but Ray has something in mind.

Also, how did he get to this place in eight, nine months from where he was at the start of 64, where he's got his student loan and he's thinking about taking time off of college? And how did Larry Page recognize...

that this is the guy, of all the people, I mean, Dave wrote One Fine Day, which is a great song, but how did he say, oh, no, this guy, you've got to keep writing songs.

And at the end of each year, you, he's always talking about, well, this was like the most depressing Christmas I've ever had.

You know, it's, you know, but it's true.

I mean, it's, it's like how he's feeling and you're like, wow, you know, you mean like Waterloo sunset or, or field screen.

They didn't, you know, that didn't make sense.

It's great.

I'd have picked a different one.
