Watercolor painting

It's kind of funny.

Watercolor's supposed to be relaxing, but half the battle is just getting the water cup filled without spilling it on your desk.

True.

That's honestly why brushes that hold water internally are such a small but genuinely useful detail.

So Sean said, hey, I sold that Jeremiah one.

I went, what now did you do? So Jeremiah has apparently become the breakout star of Sarah Beth Terry's Watercolor Cinematic Universe.

So here's one that's going out today.

Watercolors.

Watercolors are either put up in little cakes, in pans, or in tubes.

In every instance, they are ground very finely in a watery medium to which some glutinous material has been added, such as gum arabic.

And in the case of tube colors and pan colors, glycerin, sugar, or glucose to prevent them from hardening or drying out entirely.

Watercolors, excepting those of the tempera type which contain oil, cannot be varnished, but they are fixed with a solution of gum or casein so that they do not rub off or drop off of their own weight.

There are entirely too many unstable watercolors made.

Some manufacturers carry as many as one hundred and forty different pigments in cakes, pans, and tubes.

I'm a watercolorist by trade, I mean, by training.

And I studied the Australian School of Watercolor for a while and fell in love with the medium.

Most people tell you it's terrible.

I love it.

But other than that, if it doesn't make you make more art, there's no value.

So yeah, like for instance, with that course, like what I learned made me, I started practicing more with watercolor pencils, and now like I'm more confident using watercolor pencils because I've practiced a little bit, so now I know how I like to use them.

Watercolor pencils are, they're a tool that I bought a long time ago and never really used because I couldn't figure out like it just felt too finicky and fussy and like-

Actually so I'm gonna go on this hike soon, this backpacking trip the Northville-Placid Trail in the Adirondacks of, of New York, and it's just not practical for me to bring like my normal sketching tools with me.

Like, bringing a fountain pen backpacking is not a good idea.

Watercolors I could do.

You can kind of watch the color progress through the different moods all the way through the story.

Watercolor must be difficult.

It's not too often that I hear from creators, yes, they do traditional tools and, and that sort of thing, but watercolor is very unusual.

Did that pose any challenges during the creation of your book?

Yeah.

Watercolor is very finicky, and also, it kind of just does what it wants sometimes.

There's a lot of just kind of letting it do its own thing and having some happy accidents and finding that it looks cool just spreading out or making little blobs.

But every so often it becomes like, "Oh, I think I'm gonna have to redo this whole page."
