Wasdale

We were just slipping.

So coming down into Wasdale, I was in a low point.

I was like, my knee was hurting because it's such a steep ascent off Scarf Bell.

I remember just lying in my mum's car.

Scarfell Pike is actually a pick to get to because you've got to climb it from one of two directions.

And Wasdale, which is the one that most people go for, for the shortest route.

is you have to go right the way round onto the coast and then back in because of the way valleys work.

You can't drive up over the mountains to get there.

The hotel, which was built by Manchester Corporation, very Art Deco, very of its period.

But initially, the idea had been that they might have built one right at the valley head, much like it is at Wasdale, and it would've been a walkers' hotel.

It would've been somewhere where you could just get up in the morning, put your boots on, and go up to Small Water or somewhere and come back and have your breakfast, and then go off on one of the other fells.

But they had to look at practicalities and where they were going to dispose of sewage.
